First Look at Viking Berserkers and Longboats

My takes -

  • Bersekers will wield 2 weapons. It can be customized to wield 2 axes or one sword and one axe.
  • Longboats can transport warriors while also attack
  • Elite Berserkers will wear wolf fur on head

One thing that gives me some comfort is that they finally didn’t put those stereotypical horned helmets on the Vikings.

It is not known, out there, the horned helmets ended up using the elite unique units…

Hello everyone, good morning  Look:

Let’s hope they’ve not replaced the horned helmets with tropey semi-nude barbarbarians.

So it seems that the Viking period is the main inspiration.

Welcome back, Woad Raider.

Yes, that means they will be “Norse” (793-1523) as in AoM/AoEO and not “Vikings” (793-1100) per se as in AoE 2…

And yes, just like in AoE 2…

Nah, if it didn’t fit in AoE 2, it’s even less likely to fit in AoE 4… they might include the Woad Raider in AoMR when they add the Celts…

I mean the bare chests of the Vikings in the picture remind me of Woads.

Yes, it has a certain…

Well, so far the Swedish Vikings in the game (Macedonian Varangians) don’t have horned helmets, so I guess everything’s fine for now.

Time period

This confirms that the Vikings will indeed be “Vikings” in the sense that they represent the Viking Age (793-1100). At least that’s the understanding given that their timeline is slightly different from that of other civilizations in the game (800-1600).

Perhaps we can expect “Denmark” with late medieval elements and landmarks for a variant, maybe like Kalmar Union, I don’t know.

It would also be interesting to wonder if they’ll have bombards or handcannons, because historically, the Vikings didn’t develop this technology due to their period of decline (around 1100), which marked the end of that Vikings era and the beginning of the Norse kingdoms: Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. It would be great to see what Imperial units (IV) they replace them with: Berserker Corps? Jomsvikings destroyers? Giant Rams?

No Macedonian Sweden Vikings recycling

Okay, so the Vikings won’t have Ridaris with +6/+6 heavy armor.

That’s fine, the Vikings weren’t known for having powerful heavy cavalry; they were an infantry civilization.

They only began to have cavalry after suffering their first defeats, and even when they created their first heavy cavalry corps, they did not stand out much nor were they their main force, because it was difficult to raise horses in Scandinavia.

Zero Empires’ comment does not confirm that. He does not say they will only represent that shorter timeline.

It actually sounds like he is hinting the opposite.

Yes, for me it could be Vikings as the main civ and then the first variant, the Kalmar Union, more focused on the late Middle Ages…

Yes, they’re probably like the Norse from AoMR, and like the Templar Knights, they don’t have gunpowder, but they do have battering rams and trebuchets…

The generic units unique to the Norse (and not just cosmetically unique) are:

Civilians

  • AoMR Gatherer icon Gatherer: Gathers all resources but cannot construct buildings (other than Ox Carts, Farms, and Houses).

  • AoMR Ox Cart icon Ox Cart: Mobile drop site.

Human soldiers

  • AoMR Town Center Norse icon Town Center and AoMR Longhouse icon Longhouse:

    • AoMR Berserk icon Berserk: General-purpose infantry. Can be trained from the Town Center, or transformed from Gatherers. Can also be trained at the Longhouse, Dark Age onwards.
  • AoMR Longhouse icon Longhouse

    • AoMR Throwing Axeman icon Throwing Axeman: Feudal Age infantry good only against other infantry.

    • AoMR Hirdman icon Hirdman: Feudal Age infantry good only against cavalry.

  • AoMR Great Hall icon Great Hall

    • AoMR Raiding Cavalry icon Raiding Cavalry: Feudal Age cavalry good only against archers.

    • AoMR Jarl icon Jarl: Castle Age cavalry good against soldiers.

  • AoMR Hill Fort icon Hill Fort

    • AoMR Huskarl icon Huskarl: Castle Age infantry good against archers.

Siege weapons

Heroes

  • AoMR Temple icon Temple and AoMR Great Hall icon Great Hall:

    • AoMR Hersir icon Hersir: Infantry Hero unit which can be trained from the Temple and the Longhouse. Collects Relics and passively generates gold.
  • AoMR Great Hall icon Great Hall

    • AoMR Godi icon Godi: Castle Age ranged hero. Collects Relics and passively generates gold.

Ships

Norse warships have greater attack compared to their contemporaries in other civilizations.

So in that case, the Vikings would be from 793-1523 (from the first Viking attack to the end of the Kalmar Union) with fully Viking units, and then with the Kalmar variant you can include later units and even gunpowder units…

Yeah, I doubt they’re trying to represent Danes up to 1523, at least with the Main civ, but the Norse period.

The thing is, if the Main civilization is going to have Longoats and even Berserkers, I doubt they’ll reach an age where they were banned or replaced (Longboats → Hulks).

On the other hand, if they’re going to make a Viking-themed Crucible, using only that civilization, and they expect them to continue raiding even with post-Imperial units, I doubt they’ll change their look or Viking units for the Danish ones from the Kalmar era.

In any case, I would really like a variant like you say, Kalmar or Denmark, or Norway, because these countries had very beautiful medieval landmarks, although of course, later than the Viking period.
Anyway, we’re just theorizing.

Age of Empires 4 is already one of the most played RTS games, with only half the player base of Age of Empires 2.

At this point, comparing it to Age of Empires 2 is pointless: The people who have stuck with that game do so because they prefer the 2D design, their computers can’t handle Age of Empires 4’s graphics, the custom campaigns have been around since 1999 (27 years), the focus on micro over macro, or because all the civilizations are nearly identical with few variations.

Yes, I hadn’t thought of that… they could be the same Viking units, but starting with Castle Age they change their attire to Danish or Hanseatic League clothing…
