As a commercial product, a game is always prone to realistic concerns, and would be stuck in unsatisfactory situations. Some problems may never be addressed due to the same reason. I think we all know that when talking about how the game needs to improve.
But some people try to neglect the situation by iterating those realistic concerns that everyone already knows. No. “It needs improvement” is not neglected by “why they just cannot improve it immediately”. No one is asking the latter.
A handy example: Civ 7 was just released. Most people praise the greater diversity and details in unit models, while also acknowledging the obvious lacking of other aspects such as a horrible UI, whether they like the style, the game, or not.
The “lacking” is both neutral and objective, however one wants to twist it to subjective. And most people would also acknowledge that (1) these are the inevitable cost of delivering much higher-quality models and greater diversity (meaning more investments on individual units and civs, leading to a smaller quantity), and (2) a common business decision of releasing a game pre-matured. People believe (3) they should improve the game gradually in the coming years, but most would also agree that (4) the current state is not perfect, and it’s not that the devs believe it is.
The above are all different perspectives. Some are facts. Some are statements. Some are expectations. Most are not even negative. Acknowledging an unsatisfactory situation does not necessarily attack whoever is im charge. But when it comes to AoE4 someone always attempts to mix them all up into “you are using your subjective feelings to attack the game”.
And considering Civ is a more long-lasting series with more die-hard fans, I expected the AOE community (which does not include the third game, for sure) would do better.
Oh, Gaia should be a swap in-out, for sure. The main cost is usually development time, I agree.
Like I said, I want these kinds of improvements. Just don’t have much time for make-believe arguments about them. The side note was just a side note, and nothing more.
Performance is a problem for the devs to solve. But pretending it’s some made-up fanboy argument doesn’t help anyone. It fosters division instead of lifting the game and community up.
Civ 7 is actually a good example of that. Lots of bad faith criticism alongside the good stuff. The devs are responding well to it, and hopefully ignoring those just looking for a cheap shot. I have faith that game will improve, as long as the publisher doesn’t pull the plug because they want to inflate their quarterly results.
Of course, it’s just a matter of taste… and yes, the end of support for AoE 3 leaves you wondering, “What now?” We can’t discuss new DLCs, new civs, new units, new updates… we’re just left with the game as it is now and out of the picture… that makes the interest in the game stagnate and there’s less activity on the forums…
Yes, I think that with the DLCs they will improve the graphics by eliminating the blur and creating ambient occlusion…
Yeah, it’s like:
Brown buttons: Units
Green buttons: Technologies
And out… it’s very simple and bland… I hope there’s a mod that lets you change the UI of 4 to that of 2 DE or 3 DE at least…
Yes, it’s simply varying the fauna you already have in the game…starting with the AoE 2 fauna (jaguars and llamas/guanacos in America and lions and zebras in Africa), then adding more to make it like the AoM fauna (giraffes and hippos in Africa) and finishing with the AoE 3 fauna (capybaras and tapirs in America and yaks/water buffalos and pandas in Asia)…
Sure, I think they will eventually improve Civ 7 if it just came out and still has 5 years of content, I’m not worried I’ll stick with Civ 6 until then…
Sure, it’s not what the linked thread was about though. It’s like replying to someone saying “Aztecs are bad” with “they buffed Aztecs” and then someone else saying “yeah but the French are still bad”.
It’s like . . . alrighty?
I mean they’ve made some minor UI improvements over time, but it’s clear that the design of the UI was here to stay, vs. something that simply lacked detail like water, siege death animations, and so on.
I actually kind of like the sky noodles for some reason, or at least don’t mind them. Can they be turned off in Options? If not, that would be a good one to add. I can see how some players would want to disable them
That aside, I do hope they do a bunch of things to beautify AoE4 someday. It’s in need of a visual makeover or overhaul
