Game Config Not Found [AoE4] persists

I have the game on steam, on my primary (and only) SSD. I have the same config error on game launch that has been presented in the Forum before. Unfortunately, those same solutions didn’t work for me.

What I’ve tried:

  • Run as admin
  • Verify integrity
  • Reinstall
  • Manually delete, verify (reinstall through the backdoor)
  • Allow through ransomware protection (not only Cardinal, also webclient.exe and the two bssndrpt)
  • Allow through Firewall for Cardinal
  • Reinstall latest visual c++ thingy

I’m all out of ideas. Is there a way to manually create the game config data? What puzzles me most is that it has worked previously. I did play the tutorial and for a bit over 3 hours in total. I don’t know what changed and what I can do. Please - does anyone has any idea?

Also: I guess the log data is supposed to be stored under user/documents/my games, but there is no aoe4 folder. Under user/games are aoe2 and aoe3 folders, but also no aoe4. So I guess the game somehow can’t create the files somewhere around there? How do I give it permission?
