Game crashes on start up D3D12 Error

Issue:

On initialization the main loading screen the game freezes and a D3D12 Error message appears and the game crashes. See image:

Repro Steps:

Not sure. The first time i noticed this issue is when trying to place the Herspideas Tree God Power. I got the error and the game crashed, but I restarted the game and I kept playing with no issue for awhile. Then it crashed last night randomly and now I canā€™t play at all, and get this error everytime I try to open the game.
I have attempted to restart my computer, run in admin mode, and delete and re-install the game with no luck. Please help.

I also submitted a support ticket and this is what they told me:

"
Please try the following:

  • Manually Update Visual C++ Redistributables

You can find these files HERE. After executing the file, click Repair.

Please Note that Age of Mythology: Retold requires Win10 64-bit as part of its minimum technical requirements, if you are running a 32-bit version, you may not be meeting min-spec.

  • Restart your PC

If the problem persists, let me know.

I tried that and it didnā€™t work for me, but maybe it will for someone else.

I tried too and the game worked just fine. But now again i have still the same issueā€¦ now i know for sure that the problem is the Hesperides treesā€™. I tried everything and the game worked just fine until i used that tech

With the new update i still canā€™t load the game. Same error with same issue. Did you solve it?

I have been working with the support team over the last few weeks and they gave me the full list of all the basic solutions including, updating drivers, turning off cloud gaming, etc.

None of these worked for me. Yā€™all can try and open a support ticket to see if it will work for you.

Then they basically told me they passed this issue up the chain and to just wait for another update.

In the meantime, I have been playing this via cloud gaming on GeForce Now because it works on there and is free, so that might work for some of you.

I have the same error while launching the game. Bought it yesterday via Steam. Any updates?

@threalviciuz, that is what they told me as well. The new update on September 13th did not fix the problem.

@bbosko, No fixes yet. You can try to open a support ticket with them and see if one of their solutions work.

Thank you for reaching out to Age of Empires Support. I apologize for the trouble you have encountered with Age of Mythology: Retold crashing! To try and resolve this issue can you please try the steps below?

  • Check for [Windows updates] manually and install all of them
  • [Update Gaming Services]
  • Perform a clean installation your GPU drivers if you have recently updated them, try installing the previous version of drivers
    • [AMD Cleanup Utility]
    • [How do I manually clean install the NVIDIA driver for my graphics card?]
  • Whitelist the whole game folder instead of just game .exe file and disable any deep/live scanning feature
  • Uninstall the game, restart your PC then re-install the game to your main drive
  • Disable One Drive and iCloud synchronization if they are enabled.
  • Make sure that the game uses your external GPU instead of your on-board graphic card
  • Disable any overclocking that your computer has
  • Disable Nvidia GeForce Experience In-Game Overlay if you have a Nvidia GPU**.**

If the steps above donā€™t work out, please try the additional steps we have listed in the articles below.

There is a workaround that i found in another topic and that is: ā€œRename background_atlantis.mythscn to background_atlantis.mythscn.oldā€
It work for meā€¦ at least i can start the game and play but i still canā€™t use the ā€œHesperiades treeā€ because it crash again.

I noticed the game breaks as well even if a computer player in skirmish uses the power.

Iā€™m currently having basically the same issue, but it only triggers in the new atlantis campaign quest where the trees are introduced. I can do everything else in game but that, and it hasnā€™t frozen me out of the whole game yet but none of the workarounds are fixing it. I guess I just have to wait to do the campaign until thereā€™s an update that fixes this.
