Outdated mods could cause issues at start, yes, I recommend you to delete the local mods folder(make a backup of it) and then verify integrity of game files and try again.
You can find the folder here:
C:\Users\User\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE\Many_Numbers\mods

Was worth a try, but it makes no difference.
I deleted the mods folder, but the game still doesnā€™t start and the latest log still shows the same as the ones before:

Initializing Time System
Initializing Command Line
Problem with installation detected.
Exiting with code 0

Try deleting your user folder/making a backup C:\Users\User\Games\Age of Empires 2 DE\Numbers and reinstalling the whole game.

Iā€™ve now moved the entire ā€œAge of Empires 2 DEā€ folder to my Desktop and will reinstall the game.
Fingers crossed that will workā€¦ Iā€™ll report back later.

Hi everyone.
I had the same problem , game crashing 100% of games when i clicked on start game.

I could fix the problem removing the mod ā€œ1251_Night edition Main Menuā€ i dont know why but this mod is crashing the game with the last update of the game.

What OS are you using?

I own the HD version on Steam, and the DE version on Microsoft Store.
While I havenā€™t tried the HD version (why, when I want to use the DE version?), I get the same error as everyone else.

Iā€™m on Windows 11, and Iā€™ve tried everything mentioned in the AoE2 FAQ, with the exception of reinstalling Windows (which is a very stupid nuclear option to even mention. The idea to just reinstalling Windows after several months of configuration because a game can run is doa). I used to be able to play the game, but I canā€™t remember if I tried after installing Windows 11 or not (Iā€™m 100% sure the game worked on Windows 10, but that was almost 3 years ago)
