Games crashes on start since new update

Age of Mythology: Retold Report a Bug

  • Platform: Steam

  • Operating System: Windows 11

Issue: When starting the game the screen stays black, but I can hear the music. After ~20 seconds windows tells me the game is not responding.

Also after forcing the game to shut down Steam still shows that the game is running and the only way to reset this is to restart the PC.

Repro Steps: Starting the game unfortunately “works” every time to reproduce this crash…

EDIT: I tried to reinstall the game and updated Windows - neither of those helped. Game is still crashing when starting it.

I tried quite a lot now (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbHxwx1aWVg&t) and nothing helped.

What caught my attention is that Windows seems to try running the game with AMD Radeon™ Graphics. I manually changed that to using my AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT and that didnt help either. But it leads me to think that the problem has to do with my graphic card, which maybe in some way isnt supported after the update anymore?
I want to note again though that before the Update I played ~15 hours on the exact same PC without any kind of problems.

I have the same issue, i tried reinstalling the game, the c++ redistribution, but nothings work. I’m thinking about requesting a refund

I think/hope there will be a new update at or shortly after the official release and hopefully it will be fixed then. But It’s really annoying :frowning:

I was able to solve my issue, the problem was my antivirus McAfee was closing the game silently

I was able to solve my issue as well. I reinstalled the driver and by doing so found out that I didnt put my monitor into the right HDMI slot. I dont know what exactly caused the problem and as I mentioned before the update I was able to run the game perfectly fine, but well…now it works again.
