General atlantean feedback so far (mostly design wise)

thought i do a separat topic for atlanteans units, aesthetics and some gameplay stuff.

Kronos

nice idea regarding kronos. even i would see kronos more human looking than gaia. i mean what i always liked to think is that his hole skin got burned down and his hair fall out during his time down there so let him look more tortured and less rock golem would make it maybe better aswell?

Gaia

what i noticed for gaia: when you look at her temple statue it looks very thematic and cool. not only does she look now like how she looks elswhere but she also has that feminine “flower” pose. really nice idea and i think it should be honoured for whoever had this idea for her pose.

Oranos

i also agree freakin 25 sec vision on an attacked unit seems really strong especially early game for Oranos players. but i personally prefer the two free myth units and the now improved and unique looking gaia lush. (they could improve the heal even a bit at least for buildings in my personal opinion at least.

Unit sound

stymphalian bird looks now like the giant eagles of Lord of the Rings. but their sounds… aswell as some few other ones… really hoped they would replace some like stymphalian birds sounds… they are too overtuned in my opjnio during some others feel less quality. especially compared to the new sounds they introduced for other units. seems like they for attys they changed the least sound design wise… but it still might be a slighlty earlier version of them and they still work on a few improvements?

Titan

i mean as far as i saw (not in my game) they slightly alterend the atlantean titan! which is great news i think cause now he has the cool new stuff + the cool old stuff (at least in my opinion).
EDIT: titan walks really silly. please fix this before release! 8/10 (if you talented guys fix the walking animations it really might be a 10/10)

Favour

still couldn’t get behind an efficent favour generation with oracles. maybe cause i am too nooby and forgot to place and scout them later on. cause i think its obvious you don’t want to clump them (you never did this before anyway) but i had quite a lot favour early game but lategame less and less (maybe cause i forgot to train more at the temple - hm… my bad i guess. or did some others had the same experience?)

Myth units

Caladria looks great. Sound i hoped she would get the same treatment as valkyrie for norse. no new voicelines (yet) still didn’t use her. 8/10

Promethean looks solid. Would prefer some exhausting mumbling than the old voices since the look more like tortured souls now between life and death which is a cool design concept but i still think the sounds don’t reflect that. zombie sounds might work better here maybe. (opinion?) Lava vines through uprade on the legs look a bit too much. the legs should be the least heated looking part - at least in my opinion. 7.5/10

Automaton looks really great - especially with upgrades. old sound fits here still the best. hope they are better now than in old AoM. still needs testing. 10/10

Behemoth looks really badass now, attack animation seems to be improved too aswell as walking animation. still needs some upgrade - yeah thats a reminder that there are still some myth units lacking a unique upgrade :stuck_out_tongue: (sorry but i have to) 10/10

Satyr looks pretty similar but didn’t test and saw it yet. 9/10

Stymphalian bird looks really cool now! like the giant eagle vibe from LotR! (like its new wing animation) sounds could be still better… that screeching always annoyed me and doesnt fit a giant eagle in my honest opinion. (also could have an upgrade where all his feathers have that silver going and improve dmg and pierce armor (?) still needs an upgrade like the nemean lion has where it gets all feathers silver looking like the nemean lion looks all bronze/golden looking. 8.5/10

dryads look way better now but i think could have a more female body shape and a bit longer fingers to reflect deadly branches. i think of skyrims spriggan here. but i am still already quite happy they look now better than old dryds which looked really derpy… 9/10

Hekagigantes looks way better now. didn’t test it yet tho but so saw it eslewhere. nothing to say here. Special looks still cool just better now. also they have a way better and more fitting attack punching in quick succession 10/10

Lampades still look quite uninspired and like old human witches. hoped if they still take them they would try something new like with the behemoth and argus. 5/10

Argus looks in my opinion at least way cooler, creepier and less goofy now but i still will never understand why they didn’t make argus a giant humanoid like heka gigantes just with many eyes. i mean norse has 3 humanoid giants. also they still could have left argus vomiting special. still feel like a green many eyed giant would have been better as a new design away from the either pretty goody or badass sci-fi alien… just my opinion tho. 7/10 (old argus was a 3/10 for me)

Servant looks like the old one just better. but nothign wrong with that at all. no changes needed here in my opinion. 10/10

Nereid looks also pretty much like an upgraded version of the old one. simple yet effective. i really like it. (also the woman looks quite sexy now wish lampades and a few others would look that sexy :stuck_out_tongue:  10/10

ManOwar pretty much the same. hoped to look more menacing like the kraken does. but it looks quite alright. solid design. 9/10

Tatarian Spawn also pretty much the same “just” upgraded. their spawn animation also looks a bit goofy. (why that somersault?) 8/10

Military units

human military units look now way more roman inspired. most look aesthetically really pleasing. (love the shields!)
REALLY like the new fire siphon design. ships look great too. love the new sails.
EDIT: (heard turma is pretty bad now, but i am glad they got rid of that turma meta… was pretty boring to watch in my opinion. and i never personally liked to use them. but their new design still is pretty great!)

Buildings

like an upgraded old version but i always loved the building design for the atlanteans personally. now “just” looking much better. also love the new god statues (gaia one in particular)

thats a content creators opinion. overall very similar to mine:

Let’s check out the new Atlantean units in Age of Mythology Retold! (youtube.com)

what are your opinions so far?

I think they should have made the military units look less Roman, rather than more.
I mean, I get that the Titans Expansion reused assets that were meant for a Roman civ, but they tried to mask it with texture changes, small additions to the model, or weird lore bits, but now they go all in on the roman look, even adding Roman elements to human units where they weren’t as obvious before.

I mean even I really like the armor/visuals and the mix between fantasy/roman gladiator. I might agree cause that really rules roman as a potential new civ out in the future. I am sorry for all roman civ lovers and speculators but on the bright side: you still have Atlantean’s tho.

I’m not saying I want or need a Roman civ to be added (tho I wouldn’t be opposed to it) but I don’t think that the Atlanteans are or should be Romans. Or Greeks for that matter. But rather Atlanteans. No issue in keeping the designs from the past, but instead of going “That was originally a Roman unit, lets make it look more Roman” they should have looked into ways to better hide the Roman design elements, and make them seem more original and unique.
I’ve read complaints about the Atlanteans feeling like a bunch of ideas, and assets they made for different civs they considered adding, but ended up deciding against it, thrown together into a pile, rather than an actual civilisation or society. References to what Plato wrote about Atlantis are there, but limited to textures, upgrade names, and lore bits in the descriptions. And even tho I’d say the Gaia wonder seems like it could align with it, I can’t say that point is mute or wrong.

I think having three Hellenic-based pantheons would be serious overkill.

Right now, absolutely! Having Romans be the second DLC pantheon being added after the reworked Chiese would probably be the worst decision they could make, appart from adding Catholicism. But later down then line, once Chinese, and two or three more Pantheons have been added, and Hellenic-based stuff wouldn’t make up half or more than half the playable options anymore, if a Roman civ was added, then it may be reasonable.

That, however, was not my point.

Fully agree on the fire siphon, tho. Over the grey box from the original, that’s a clear improvement.
