Graphics overhaul

It depends on the age of the tiles. The tiles in this stock image look very close to the AoE3 roofs.

That aside, it seems to me like the AoMR/AoE3 vs AoE4 visual style debate ultimately comes down to personal preference. In which case, it may be better worth the devs’ time to improve the modding tools to support adding/replacing models and textures.

I really hope they’re gonna slowly improve on textures and already existing assets, just like they did with the Khan in the latest patch with adding a new skin for Imperial Age. Relic is definitely not the most efficient dev I’ve seen. I don’t know what’s going on behind the curtains and what Microsoft is paying for, but it feels like there is a very small team working on AoE4. The changes and decisions are good compared to the first year, it’s just the pacing that’s too slow.

Yes, that’s how roof tiles look when they need changing. But we’re in the New World, I’m sure there are also roof tiles that look, you know…new, and don’t add unnecessary noise.

AoE 4 after the release of Sultans Ascend. It was the most played Age game on Steam for a month after its release.

Please read the posts more carefully. We were discussing the possibility of a game that doesn’t cater to MP and player retention, which AoE4 does.

I did. AoE is a somewhat unique position that caters to both SP and MP players.

Yes, but we were discussing the hypothesis where AoE4 didn’t support player retention (via catering to MP), so the examples would have to be games that don’t, and yet still sell DLC as successfully.

There is a different between
“MP cannot support player retention”
VS
“MP is not the only way to support player retention”
A game without focus on MP does not mean it has no player retention.

Guess which is the point I’m trying to make.

Also Sultan’s Ascend to me feels a lot more SP or casual MP oriented than the first version of AOE4. It has far more gimmick and experimental features than the latter. Just count the number of unconventional unit designs and graphics details (like weapon looks and the quality of textures)

Every Paradox strategy game, every Total War and every Civilization.
Neither is MP focused.

I know someone will jump out with “nah they are not RTS”. The topic is not restricted to RTS.
And there is no evidence that RTS cannot be more SP focused because no big company ever tried since Blizzard threw RTS into the “esports” bog.

I feel these may be well down their priority list if not fully ignored.

That is how the pvp focus (if there is one) can damage other parts of the game. It’s the reality that we’re not in the era of expansions so improvement on existing works cannot be sold again (thus comes much slower or is completely forgotten). But I still dislike that trend.

I don’t know much about TW, but Paradox games and Civ are highly replayable SP games even in their naked form, so they’re not as dependent on DLC content as AoE4 would be.

But they also release huge number of DLCs which have natural advertising effects and will bring old players back.

Also, it’s not that RTS cannot have greater SP replayability, with better AI (another aspect AOE4 can massively improve on), more casual modes, better player guidance. But RTS developers since Blizzard rarely put those on their priority list. Ironically Blizzard RTS games themselves do very well on these aspects too but their competitors only saw “pvp”.

Yes, I really wish they added an open-ended co-op mode for AoE4.

Wrt to Skirmish vs AI, even with better AI it would still be basically MP but with inferior opponents.

This is one of the worst things I ve seen in this game, now we have a civ of giants, it is ridiculous

I don’t really think they will make drastic changes to the game’s graphics. Sadly, it is gonna be like this for ever; maybe some minor changes, but colors, filters, textures, bright, sizes…I dont think so.

In this case could be Better to focus on the next AOE, with next gen graphic, i Hope

Yeah, we should really not waste our time asking for something that will not happen. I haven’t seen a single Graphics overhaul in my life of an already launched game. We had remakes, Definitives Edition, Redux, Enhanced Editions, Nexgen Update etc, years later like a different game, but a graphics overhaul of AoE IV is like pretending they will just regret the way they wanted the game to look like, and that won’t happen.

Nothing, i tried to play AOE4 again, after i finished AOMRE and i can’t play. It’s strange to me play with a different level of graphic and animations. I completed all the AOE4 campaigns and also the Sultan’s Ascend DLC (i really like the campaign) but after AOMRE i can’t return to AOE4. I’ve not the same feelings with AOE2DE maybe because it’s graphic is perfect for that game.

I’m not able to describe it. Sometimes i reternued to AOE4 to play some skirmish or co-op matches vs AI but i can’t anymore.

I think, but it’s probably only my case, playing with a low graphic in terms of immersions stopped me.

However, i think that Essence Engine should be improved a lot, embracing new technologies (like ray tracing and DLSS) and offering 4k textures for all models (from buildings to units).

watching a new CIV7 streaming i captured this screenshots from youtube to share with you how great AOE4 (or AOE5) could be with Unreal Engine:

probably the best model units that i ever seen in a RTS game:

To be honest: Would don’t you like to play with this graphic quality, in particular for single player contents?

I repeat, Unreal Engine is the future.

Campaigns and games like AoMR are perfect for people like you. You should keep playing it and let people who enjoy AoE4 do their thing as well.

Civilisation is not, nor has it ever been, an RTS game.

Nor does the Unreal Engine have anything to do with Firaxis’ talented artists, or what they’re able to accomplish in a game releasing in 2025, 3.5 to 4 years after AoE IV did.

And this is coming from a SP enjoyer who likes the look of the new AoE II: DE DLC (I don’t own AoE II: DE though, so it’s moot. Still keeping an eye on Retold for when I have some money spare).

You are right. I choosed the wrong genre. I mean turn biased Strategy games.

The Unreal Is the future because It’s the most popular Engine in the world, very supported with dedicated teams (Epic) and very easy to use for the most of developers. This Is the reason why many Developers are going to leave their own engines (are what happened to HALO or Firefly studios for the next Stronghold or, again, Civilization 7 itself). It aslo a very moddable Engine. Essence Engine Is difficult for many people and this Is the reason why Mods are not fully supported, except some things.
