Historical Medieval Cavalry vs Game's 30% bonus

Cavalry in the game is very strong. It is possible to win using cavalry in any age, in fact my experience playing Age IV is that many players who like France can win battles against mixed armies, just by massing heavy knights and overwhelming the oponent.

My simple question is, why did the cavalry get exaggerated increases even though they are already the strongest units in the game!!!

Cavalry reigned during the Middle Ages, but by the end of that period armies were mostly pikemen, arquebusiers and cannons.

My research into medieval warfare has shown that siege weapons were rarely used against infantry, but cannons became the deciding factor, they could attack infantry and stone buildings.

I think the update made a mistake by giving more strength to the cavalry in the age when it was in decline. Cannons, arquebusiers and pikemen were the standard for medieval armies in the late 15th century. In other words, gunpowder weapons have become the strongest.

My personal opinion about the update is that the game has become similar to Age 2, with crossbowmen and cavalry dominating. The matches also haven’t become more enjoyable because battles continue to take a long time and it’s literally been terrible for people who like to use melee infantry. In short, the update has unbalanced the game in favor of cavalry and at the same time made the game more tiring to play, because it becomes a war of units against units with less focus on artillery and this stretches the game.

To prove my point, I did some research on GPT chat:

I don’t want to suggest that the entire game should be based on history and physics, but… the last update was terrible, they should revert what they did especially in the Library, maybe nerf the mangonel and bee nest in Age III, but overall they should revert the recent update.

Regular Age IV late game army in History.

Simply, the game doesnt account for IRL problems of needing/having so many cavalry units.

In life, horses, weapons and armor were controlled in the same way military grade weapons were for similar reasons. It ended up that one needed a certain level of political relevance to acquire the best weaponry. No such limit in the game.

Also, having alot of cavalry meant having alot of large, hungry animals readily accessible. Note that the places that DID have masses of cavalry that were NOT replaced by infantry - they tended to also have a reliable food source for them.

Need played a role too. In europe, places were close enough that you could walk to your foe in campaign season. In asia, trying that is how roman leagions got beat up and forced to develop their own cavalry.

All in all, the power of heavy cavalry as all purpose everything killers is pretty spot on. The issue is the limitations of the game - factors like upkeep, animal breeding, and supply chains are just not a thing in the aoe series.
