Hope for an african DLC

All the negative impressions regarding Victors and Vanquished noticed, I want to give a positive outlook on what this development could lead to.
As you know the Victors and Vanquished DLC uses many of Filthydelphias Scenarios. But it does not use any of the scenrios of Kings of West Africa. These were originaly made for the The African Kingdoms DLC but were never used.
Missions are present fore these Kings:

  • Tenkamenin (1076), last ruler of Wagadu in modern Mauritania
  • Dunama (1240), ruler of the Kanembu people along Lake Chad
  • Omalo (1260), priest-king of the Igbo of modern Nigeria
  • Musa (1330), the richest king in history
  • Ewuare (1440), ruler of Benin in modern Nigeria
  • Rumfa (1463), ruler of the Hausa city of Kano in modern Nigeria
  • Sunni Ali (1475), founder of the Songhai Empire
  • Tengella (1490), warlord of the Fulani nomads
  • Askia (1492), the greatest ruler of the Songhai Empire

Since the quality of the scenarios is already very good and Microsoft are now open to implement Mods, the only missing thing fore these scenarios are the civs that they are played with. And looking at history maps, we have some prominent empires in this region, that are sadly missing in the game.

With Songhai, Hausa and (Kanem-)Bornu 3 major civs could be added in a Dynasties of India style DLC that would cover even more area than the much requested Tibetan civ. Other possible civs are Benin and yoruba.

Same for Cao Cao. So I think we can say with some confidence that Africa and the Sino-Sphere are still on the table.

I also thought about this, but the problem with the Cao Cao or the Three kingdoms scenarios is, that they all play far befor the year 300, which would be clearly out of the skope of AOE2

A new African DLC with 2 new civs, 2 new official campaigns and these historical battles reworked should be a really nice idea

the picture is from 1582. Its the height og the Songhai and Bornu and also close to the end of the AOE2 time frame.

here is another from 1412

9 years later… laughs in Berbers!

We would need more than one dlc to satisfyingly cover West Africa, but it would be a good start.

Agadez was taken from Songhai by the Hausa in the 1510s. Later Bornu and Hausa fought for the region. It is a mistake on the map.

I suggest the following campaigns:
Songhai: Askia the Great
Hausa: Kanta Kotal
Kanembu: Idris Alooma

The campaigns would be connected like in Dawn of the Dukes

Thanks. I’d love to see Africa on the next DLC. That’s my first pick. But I’m leaning towards on the other side. East Africa. Nubians and Somali would be cool.

South africa has 0 civis too.

Kanembu could still be part of an East African dlc.

In south africa was barely anything that could be considerd a civ. Like in australia, they were mostly tribes. The is very litle basis to make something a civ from these regions (Campaign, Wonder, UU). Also for the techtree most would be need to cut to make them realisitc (no metal working, no horses, no siege, no castle)

Map from 1500:

Zimbabwe, Swahili and Kongo beg to differ

what wonder and campaign would you give them?

Swahili was actually quite advanced. Persian and Arab traders merged with the local Bantu population that led to Swahili culture and city states. Eventually Kilwa would annex most of Swahili, including even Northern Madagascar.

They had stone buildings, walls and they traded with India and China. Perhaps Great Mosque of Kilwa would be the best choice for a wonder. They started using gunpowder with the arrival of Portuguese, they had their own cannon galleon.

The campaign would be centered around Kilwa (similar to Bari). The first few missions should be about annexing Swahili cities in coastal Mozambique, Madagascar, Kenya, Tanzania and Comoros. The last few missions would be about civil wars and allying with the Portuguese.
