The main reason is that during the period when computers became popular in Vietnam, around the years 1995-2000, when the internet was not yet widespread, gaming shops primarily offered offline and LAN games. Games like AOE1 and Counter-Strike were pre-installed and easily played over LAN. As a result, these two games became very popular here, with many tournaments ranging from amateur to professional, and the prizes were quite substantial (some championships had cash prizes for the winners up to $20,000-30,000)
