How does AoE II run on modern operating systems?

Does Windows 98 API run on my xbox or something?

Performance of the game is really good compared to Goldeneye, from the N64, which constantly speeds up and slows down on my xbox because of emulation (I think) but AoE doesn’t have this problem.

I have a small problem with AoE2. I play on PC and I get the error with extended code: 0xfffffff3 when I want to connect to the multiplayer service

I CAN’T PLAY WITH MY BROS T.T

You can’t play at all, I’m just asking about the technology behind it.

Nobody can answer this lol

Which AoE 2 version do you refer to? CD? HD? DE?

DE, I don’t know what the others are. I’ll have to search.

The same idea should apply to all of them though.

CD is the original version that was indeed programmed for Win 95/98.
HD is the 2013 version that was released on Steam which was intended for modern systems (so XP and beyond as HD still worked on XP)
DE is the most recent one, intended for Win 10 and beyond

If I understand your question correctly, you wonder why AoE 2 runs good on your console as opposed to GoldenEye, right? That’s because GoldenEye is emulated whereas AoE 2 DE is not.

Yes, but it must use extra parts of Windows? Backwards compatible software. It’s built for Windows 98.

The CD version was built for Win 98, the new version isn’t. It runs natively on Windows 10 and 11

That’s pretty clever. I wish they could make Goldeneye run natively but I guess it was built for N64 and nobody wants to rebuild it to run natively. I thought AOE would need a heap of 1990s Windows bloat to make it run. Interesting.

Thanks.

Not sure if this is relevant, but for me the CD version of AoE1 runs perfectly on Windows 10, with no need for any compatibility settings. I also have several pre-release versions of AoE2 that run perfectly as well. However, I couldn’t get the CD versions of AoE2 or The Conquerors to run on Windows 10 without installing the UserPatch. Not sure why that is – kind of annoying since I wanted to play The Conquerors with its original balance.

Well, Rare famously worked on a version for the Xbox 360 back in 2007 which got cancelled due to the license hell GoldenEye went through. That version was built from the ground up for the 360, much like the Perfect Dark remaster that was released later in 2010 that you can play on One and Series due to backwards compatibility.

In case you still have HD Edition, you can use this tool to create a Conquerors copy that’s ready to run on Voobly:

Oh, that’s still using the UserPatch. I think the person to whom you’re replying wanted to avoid AoC version 1.0c and play with something earlier. It’s probably possible to make a data mod to restore balance from an earlier version than 1.0c, but as far as I know I think UP requires that version.

Oh, good point!

I still have my AoC disc with the old Turtle Ship sprites somewhere (must be before 1.0b I guess?). I have to test whether I’m able to install it on Win 10.

I also want to mention this tool that allows you to switch to any AoK/AoC version:

Yes, mostly I wanted to play with version 1.0 Koreans, before War Wagons and Shinkichon got nerfed. Kind of silly, I know. It would be nice to be able to play the campaigns as they were originally intended too.

game getting worse by the patch and has been for the last 12 months. each patch seems to introduce bugs and some bugs was claimed “fixed” several times but not fixed. they always come back

this includes some performance bug/issue as well
