I’ve got some PCs set up on a local network and want to play AOE 2 DE on them. All ports are open on the PCs. When I launch the game the Multiplayer button is greyed out.
Yeah the steam pages tags just straight up lie about being LAN
You need to go online, click multiplayer, and set up a private lobby…
I still cant believe how this has never been fixed
Thanks, that’s my problem, there’s no internet connection where these PCs are. Had to smuggle the screenshot out on a flash drive lol.
That’s complete crap though, can’t believe you have to be online to play LAN… guess I’m busting out the original AOE II cds, that plays local fine offline or not.
The game has online DRM.
They don’t want you to simply go into offline mode with the same Steam account 10 times to play with your friends via a shared VPN or something like that.
They should simply stop false marketing by saying we offer LAN even if they don’t. You could play in LAN when it was out initially. Its simply was an update which broke the LAN and never fixed.
I agree with that but as far as I know it never used to work offline.
It really sucks that they don’t have proper LAN support. This is partly on purpose, as a misguided effort to prevent piracy. It has been possible to directly connect over LAN on DE, but it still requires an internet connection and has to go through a private lobby on the game servers first where you then select LAN. All the limitations are by design. Even still, the feature has been broken longer than it has been working, and as far as I know it is still broken.
I prefer this over having to have to put a CD in my drive every time I want to play a game but I would obviously prefer the game to just be DRM Free.
Would be nice if all games were on gog.com.
