I think from my experience the biggest lags is if you start with all mounted villa it feels a bit like golden horde on that slow ramp up of eco. They do crush it on food early so I’m never without that.
Most of its unique units and unique techs only come out at imperial. It can do a cav rush with iron pagodas and do the whole French thing well enough. But there is a bit of a vulnerability in the castle age. I do enjoy that you can focus on cav, but they also have a lot of anti cab units and techs so really you can play it however you want.
