Since they’re essentially hero units. It’s usually too risky and expensive to mass them, so they’re best used sprinkled into your army for their aura buff to your other units.
Personally I am not a fan of this mechanic. Should it be remade?

That’s the point, you’re supposed to put just a few ones behind a line of legionaries. I even suggested that in formation he stays in the second line behind infantry as to stay safe and keep boosting them, which was implemented in some update.
My main problem with it is how it looks : he looks from the 1st or 2nd centuries AD instead of a later design (a skin he used to have). This should be fixed.
I say they should work like Monaspa. something like every 7 legionaires nearby will increase centurion attack speed by 10% max stacks of 30%, or increase their armor by 1/1, max stack 3/3.
I don’t like it either. Another mechanic copied from AoE3 like many later ones.
They could give them extra HP with each kill.
EDIT. But the cost of the unit is also highly questionable.
It dorsnt really look to have any classical equipment
If we had to be accurate we wpuld have to totally rework Legions and centurions
Since rn Byzantines and Goths give you a better late roman empire than Romans, with most of the army being quickly levied poorly armed soldiers
So this doesn’t solve the gimmick problem, but how about that centurions can be trained in either Cavalry form or Infantry form. Infantry form is cheaper, trained faster, looks more sensical, but slower and half HP.
Unlike Konniks, they cannot switch between infantry and cavalry forms once trained.
Konniks can’t switch neither… If you ask me, they should, but actually dismounted Konnik is just and extra life mechanic.
Okay, I mean forced switch upon death, and one way.
I dislike all the aura boost abilities, finding it not a fun mechanic to play with.
Since Romans are not one of the original civs, I don’t mind whether the boost ability will remain or not.
There are a bunch of other mechanics which are technically auras in disguise. I wouldn’t be surprised if they use the same implementation:
Celts Stronghold new effect, Saracens new monk UT, Georgian monaspas.
I don’t know, maybe it’d be fun if we give janissaries an aura boost to nearby hand cannons and archers?
I dont like any of these tbh, the only one I dont really mind is the Saracen one because it builds upon the unit and just feels like area healing
The Monaspa bonus feeks qiute irrelevant to me honestly, its basically always to have extra attack. It could just have it in the base stats
The helmet is very out of place, the one from the other centurion was better.
The helmet is from the height of the Empire, not from the 4th and 5th centuries.
Even stranger as the centurion used to have a period-accurate helmet before it got changed.
Oh Ibthought they had changed for a later empire one since they also removed stirrups
Thats so odd
It’s even odder when considering that the Legionary’s helmet was not changed. So those guys have the appropriate helmets, while their higher-ups felt nostalgic…
Had hoped that the helmet issue would be fixed with the elite upgrade in the Imperial Age, where the Legionary also becomes available, but nah. It’s the Imperial Centurion with the wrong helmet.
