Huns are rarely seen anymore, only on select hybrid maps like Cross / Four Lakes, but then again other civs are prioritized here (japanese, persians, etc.)
They for sure need a small buff, so here are some suggestions. I think only 1 or 2 or these would be needed. Feel free to post more below.
Tarkans could get a small amount gold from razes (10-15g). At higher level this would also force deletion of buildings, so it wouldn’t be completely useless.
Their “Trebuchets +30% accuracy” bonus could also give +30% production speed on top of it, for trebs only. This would cement them as the best civ in treb wars.
Changing their team bonus from “Stables work 20%” faster to “Mounted units are trained 15% faster” would make their cav archer play a bit easier to get into, without making it too overpowered and without nerfing their powerful stable bonus too much. Only downside would be stable upgrades would come in a lot slower, ie. paladin. This was one of their key benefits in TGs for hitting imp timings.
Just nerf Power creeper civ. That being said Huns getting SL have become a vocal in the community for a while now and big influencers like Hera and Ornlu also asked for that. Maybe they can get that. But I don’t want to throw in a bonus for them as they will be already produced 20% faster due to Huns TB.
I’m on board with Huns getting SL too. IDK if I go so far as Hera that they shouldn’t get Elite SL. I like the idea of Huns being a Paladin civ, and Elite SL might detract from that. So maybe Hera has the right idea.
It should be mentioned however that Huns are not too weak, either. They’re Wood bonus is still one of the most solid bonuses one can have, and really the main issue with them is that they are predictable in their late Castle/Imp comp (you will never go wrong making Halbs tech vs Huns).
Giving them ways to beat Halberdier, e.g. some bonus to Scorpions (they were influenced by Romans, after all) could also be a way forward.
Maybe: Scorpions cost -40% wood could be a nice way of giving them alternatives to their predictable comp
But never in a siege sense. It would seem kind of weird for Huns to have a Scorpion bonus from a historical perspective. Personally I would be more inclined towards making CA even more of a Halb killer (with bonus damage), but I also don’t really love that idea either very much to be honest.
Well many power -creepers could get a small nerf, but i think huns also would not be very interesting still as a cav Archer civs i think mongols, tatars, magyars and even saracens or japanese or vietnamese are more interesting then them atm while not necessarily being too strong (some are tough)
Adding steppe lancers would help and i would make them discounted as cav archers, as it’s not a problematic unit itself, it’s only problematic with mongols combo of faster ultime due to Hunt and bonus HP for free.
Also i would change atheism as it is still too niche, and add something, even as simple as some conversion resistance
I think you’re pointing at the core issue here: there are so many very similar civs already, all of tatars, magyars, huns, and mongols have scouts as strongest opening, all aim at the same or a very similar late game combination (hussar + (unique) CA). Yes, there are a few variations in the secondary options and the best midgame approach, but by and large the civs feel extremely similar. If you have such a situation, then it’s pretty clear that there’s always one or two civs that are doing the playstyle a little bit better than the other(s).
By the way: Adding steppe lancers to Huns (and Magyars) will make the similarity issue even worse.
What do you mean, not seen anymore ? Do you mean in tournaments or in regular ranked games ?
They appeared once in a while on FourLake in current tournament HiddenCup5 & qualifiers, which is fine. They appeared more than Bulgarians (0 times) and Burmese (1 time).
On the ladder they are above average in pich rates.
For the ladder, a civ rarely seen does not necessarily need a buff. Huns for sure do not need a buff, as they have good win rates.
I agree that they got powercrept and and and not so interesting to my eyes due to limited tech tree. A powrtcrept civ needs a rework more than a buff. Rework means buffs AND nerfs.
I think they should keep the no house civ bonus.
What holds mass CA vs mass Halb back is that you are constrained by micro (as the CA player), so even more damage isn’t the way imo.
Regarding historic accuracy: with Persians having not only HC but rifle-shooting Castles, Romans getting Trebs and Vietnamese getting Cavalier, I wouldn’t hold too dearly on accuracy. Game balance has always clearly come first.
