I don’t see people making constructive criticism. They look like sick people whose lives have been destroyed by a balance patch. I don’t think Relic is as “silly” as you think, you have to test the patch and see if the changes really work. then it will be analyzed and corrected if necessary. I love this game and I know that it needs fixes, balances and affection but I know it will be achieved. I’m concerned about the attitude of the players, totally 13-year-olds
Balance is one thing.
Totally game breaking bugs another.
Tell me something. How is this game even more broken than before after the patch. I work as a software engineer and if I shipped something like this to production, I would be fired along with my team and the company would be paying fines in millions to our customers.
I agree that there is no perfect patch at once and that we need to make progress.
However, the direction and priority of the patch must be observed. The current patch has no consistent direction and has nothing to do with the current very dominant trend.
This is the point of disappointment of users.
If you watch only a few competitions, you can clearly see which is OP and which is weak.
Man I payed full price for this game, I am expecting a quality product, I payed for age of empires not age of Springalds… What can I do, to wait another month until game balance is playable ? Or should I keep chosing french and mass springalds?
Wait for a month? You wish. Just keep beta testing the game. The devs are “listening” to your feedback. They don’t have time for crybabies. Arnt you glad you got to test this game and find bugs for such a cheap price.
I’m sorry, no. That’s the job of Relic’s QA department. Some bugs can slip through, sure, but claiming they wait a long time to release an update to prevent new bugs from being introduced and then you still have simple things like “Tower War Elephant has been renamed to Tower Elephant” and it still being called “Tower War Elephant” on one side and 52 min long research times for age IV delhi on the other. Doesn’t give me the best impression that the correct checks are in place.
Excuse me what…? We are just mad at the changes and nerfs the Delhi civ had , in the other side this patch was a really good one lol
I understand you and to be clear I share a lot of what you say. But the way of communicating it is what worries me.
I think we have to do a maturity exercise and know how to improve our relationship with Relic so that we are on the same path.
I work as a software developer too, and if I shipped something broken to production, mistakes happen. It would have to be pretty egregious to get me fired. The last time I saw a colleague fired for something, they accidentally pushed a piece of content to a production app with a swear word emblazoned across the top. It went viral on social media.
I think you’re overstating the ease for which people get fired, though I guess if you’re in the US the labour protection laws there are a joke, so that could well happen.
I mean, it depends on the product, right? If you’re providing a critical service and the fault takes that service down, sure, you could be liable for fines. Relic and World’s Edge are providing a video game. There is no lawyer (apart from maybe the infamous Jack Thompson) who’d ever bother trying to sue a video game developer for having bugs in their game. The closest a game has gotten in recent memory was Cyberpunk 2077.
Just like the OP says, I don’t think people are making constructive criticism. I don’t think “if this were me I’d be fired” is constructive criticism either, because that’s not what’d happen. If you were fired for having a product with some bugs and balance problems, your product would have to be something that peoples’ lives depended on (like medical software, or the like). Which is worlds apart from a video game.
Some things that were supposed to be fixed, aren’t.
Prelate is still bugging out from time to time.
Dehli was butchered.
New gamebreaking issues.
Randomly generated balance changes.
There’s a lot to be worried about,
I am just disappointed that they talked about “hundreds of balance changes - literally” and we get something like that.
Springald Nerf has been kinda confirmed on Dev Streams, the horsemen rebalance, dont know, maybe they are stronger now vs archers in early feudal, gotta see.
French Hulk, also gotta see if you now can fight 1 Hulk in a resource even battle. The nerf in ranged armor seems passable imho.
What i can not get is that they obviously dont seem to properly test the things they do. The Abassid multiple Research in Barracks?
The War Tower Elefeant change? I mean that is literally checked in 15 seconds if that change worked or not …
Thats the disgrace, on one hand they state they dont wanna rush out things, on the other hand they rush out things.
It just seems something went horribly wrong behind the scenes at Relic / Worlds Edge, cant explain it otherwise to be honest.
And once again, communication missing.
Other Bugs still not adressed (The Architecture Bug, the prelate bugging out). 1 Can only hope that they will push a patch rather soon, cause for me personally, i love the game, but i decided to stop playing until the springalds and french water is adressed. Was bored to Alt+F4 out of watermaps and springald meta just sucks.
Dont wanna have to wait until Spring with playing. Will give it a try now and see how it feels.
Edit:
I dont know for what it counts, but the public build is a build from 20 days ago… and release candidate 1 which was updated 2 days ago is way newer … i really hope somebody simply just pushed a wrong build + they are able to admit a human error, i wouldnt even be mad if communicated openly, ■■■■ happens.
Delhi is a balance change, not an exploit or issue in need of fixing. But sure, you’re not going to see me say you can’t be worried about things.
EDIT - whups, thought this was the other thread. My bad.
I agree. Most of the “discussion” that happens on these forums are just a bunch of people flinging around a bunch of hyperbole, buzzwords and insults, instead of actually taking the time to articulate meaningful criticism. I get it, there are issues with the game (bugs, balancing, missing features, etc.) and the process to address those issues needs some revisions (specifically to allow them to push patches and hotfixes a bit faster). I am also sure that the devs are more than aware of these problems with how often players come onto these forums with a Chicken Little complex to voice their complaints. Whether they actually fix any given issue or not is a coin toss. Maybe they will, maybe they won’t. It depends entirely on a mixture of what they have in mind for the game and how many people are actually requesting specific changes.
All I am certain about is that 1.) this is not going to be the last patch or update that we see in the game and they are going to continue to work on it and 2.) there are far more effective and constructive ways to voice opinions, complaints and suggestions beyond shrieking in text form. I can also say with some degree of confidence that they do read these forums, because almost every major bug and imbalance that gets mentioned here has been acknowledged in one form or another (even the OP Springald game).
Did play the game as the Mongols vs English.
And what I noticed is without early lancers, the Feudal Longbow rush is unstoppable now due to horsemen nerf…
Horsemen got slaughtered by longbowmen and are basically useless now.
The Mongols have become an infantry civ due to this change which greatly disappoints me…
English just go a huge buff due to horsemen nerf and they are unstoppable until castle age.
É só não jogar multiplayer, fellas
You cannot judge changes in meta after playing one game man…
SLA’s in my industry are in the magnitude of milliseconds of uptime. I am not expecting that from games ofcourse. But fact of the matter is selling an open beta for $100 and marketing it as a finished game is unfair.
I am happy to wait for months or years, heck i bought aoe3de this year and was quite happy with it and was playing ranked 1v1 with nothing to complain about. If they had just been open about the state of this game and said its an open beta guys, you can pre-order but we’ll be making balance changes and bugfixes until its ready to be released. I am sure most of the people complaining here would have happily participated and helped out in fixing the bugs without complaining about anything.
But they did not do an open beta and just released the game in its sad sorry state it is right now. It would have been fine to just label the multiplayer as open beta and let the people play campaign and single player skirmish without any problems.
Unfortunately this trend of selling unfinished games is all too rampant in the industry and we cant do anything about it anymore.
After Microsoft disbanded Ensemble Studios they could not make a single age game right. I can only hope Relic will not mess this up like their other games. CoH3 is due to be released next year which is openly inviting players to test the game and report bugs, you can simple signup get invited download and play the game.
What i can only assume is that Relic quoted much less time to get the contract for aoe4 and could not deliver the quality within the time and budget they quoted for. Covid19 lockdowns could also have played a part in making it difficult for them to playtest and develop this with quality.
Moreso when they say winter update and spring update, it gives the impression that there will be just two updates with nothing in between, which i can only assume is not right as the way things are they will be pushing out updates, patches, hotfixes for the patches, hotfixes for the hotfixes for the patches every other week it seems.
The problem is what do we mean by “open beta”. I don’t think the game is an open beta. I’m not saying this makes you wrong, we just view the game differently. It has issues, sure, and this patch also has issues, but the patch isn’t required for the product at launch (back when it launched) to be called an “open beta”, right? The two are related in terms of how people view support for the title, but not related insofar as charging for an incomplete product.
So I don’t know how we reconcile this. Some folks evidently feel the product doesn’t match what they paid for. But that’s a far cry from saying “if this happened to me in my job, I’d be fired and my company fined”. I’m not going to argue that folks aren’t getting their money’s worth, because that’s a personal metric. Nevermind not wanting to invalidate that, I literally can’t. It’s valid.
I think it would go a long way if they have anything planned inbetween, to publicise those plans sooner rather than later. If there’s anything in the way of them doing this, I hope that gets reconsidered by whoever has the decision-making there.
I will personally fire from this forum anyone who calls for the firing of any developer. Complain all you want about the game, but if you go after someone’s livelihood, you are slide tackling with your cleats up into the knees, and you don’t belong on the field.
