I Really Hope This Game Replaces AOE2: It's Just Better

Out of curiousity - why did 1 DE fail in Vietnam? Do you think the upcoming AoE 2 DLC will make players migrate?

There are two type of games that we mostly play in Vietnam.

  1. Random full tech no wall and tower
  2. Chariot archer only no wall and tower
Both using same farm bug to have infinity food, so the player could focus on the fighting. Games is short and dynamic.
The DE version offer nothing to those type of game mode. Plus, DE is more demanding when it come to hardware. The one who have a good PC don’t bother to play it, the other simply cant.
Edit: about the upcoming DLC, im sure that who ever still playing AoE here will continue play it and don’t migrate to AoE ii DE.

Well I take back what I said about wondering why folks still play AoE2. Didn’t realize how global this game is.

And right, AoE4 hasn’t failed at all. It has a lot more numbers than other new RTS games…anyone see CoH3 bomb?

It’s kind of hilarious when i saw COH2 has more player than COH3 when COH3 just released last month.

Oh, interesting. I was aware of the race to chariots with Assyrians and Shang but didn’t know that Full Tech games are also played.
I’m curious if and how the DLC will change the meta

Well with Red Bull sponsoring six tournaments for it, it tells a lot about such an old game. :stuck_out_tongue:

It is interesting to look at how differently the communities are reacting on that little detail.

AoE4 has fewer players than AoE2. Ask the typical defenders on this forum and that is apparently a good thing.

Yet, here you have CoH3 also dipping beneath its predecessor in playercount, and they’re losing it. They’re review bombing their own game. And you know whats sad about that entire situation? CoH belongs to Relic, and despite all the criticism: they are directly ignoring it. All of it. Theres been a few attempts from the developers to reach out since launch, and they firmly stand by a “good launch”.

These are the guys who was put on AoE4. It is tragic and explains a lot.

It’s random match, some of the most amazing game was played in this mode. I remember one game that one player got his base destroyed, he win the game by Wololo alone because he didn’t get access to anything other than gold, it’s so out of the box at that time.

Not long ago aoe4 got the free ottoman and malian dlc. There are also frequent balance updates. Worth noting that despite more aoe2 sales aoe4 has generated more revenue as it costs more. The games not been out long either so dlc wasn’t even needed until a year passed and that’s when we got the free dlc, there will certainly be more paid dlc’s further down the road.

and they dont come alone but with their fanbase that aproves that kind of behaviour because is normal for them for the most zealot ones

If you want fluent competitive game this game is best among age of empires game.If you want uniqueness(lots of different units for different cultures) in game age of empires 3 is the best.

Try both games, they are masterpieces… you won’t regret it, I consider them the best AoE of all, above AoM, AoE 2, AoE 4 and AoE 1…

Yes, and that is what the post is about? I’m not really arguing for converting AoE2 players. I’m talking about new generational retention.

AoE4 has a slightly younger playerbase than AoE2. We have website traffic stats. Anecdotally speaking, AoE4 has about 1 to 3% higher number of users aged 18 to 24.

Compare aoe4world.com and aoe2.net or aoe2insights.com
https://www.similarweb.com/website/aoe4world.com/#demographics

AT THE SAME TIME, compare that to Star Crtaft 2 https://www.similarweb.com/website/gosugamers.net/#demographics or starcraft2.com

SC2 has a much younger demographic, 4 to 5% higher share of players aged 18-24 at around 30%. Mind you, League of Legends has 39%. As far as RTS goes, Star Craft 2 player base is VERY young.

We can conclude at least two things from SC2’s continuing popularity and retention of new generation of players.

  1. Go Free to Play
  2. Incredible co-op experience
  3. Pristine ranked/competitive play
  4. Robust custom map editor and selection

I believe AoE4 has #3 almost locked in. I already see them going F2P some time within the next 5 years. I already see them working on #4. We just need some compelling co-op scenarios.

Barring AoM, almost any game is “bland” in variety compared to AoE3. Perhaps one of the problems of AoE3 is that high complexity in depth.

Also barring AoEO, which has a very complex meta game with home cities and gearing units and building. I’m surprised AoE4 has nothing to do on this side of the ball — no home cities, nothing to grind towards, etc.

The only thing I would ask in this matter, outside of new civs, is to add unique units in the civs that need it the most. For balance reasons, excessive variety does not make a game competitive and attractive to young people.

And for older people, I would say that they will value the Lore and SP more.

Good that i don’t buying then…

It’s because Relic (and World Edge) take too much influence of AoE 2 (obviously because is the AoE more played by the fanbase)…for there, Relic put the system of landmarks (based on the age-up of the Asian wonders and civs of AoE 3, the last civs before the 3 DE) and put new mechanics (like the troops in the wall and the hidden forests) and nothing more…the level system in AoE 4 is annoying (because don’t work more to say “hey i’m level x in the game, i’m very good”)…

I agree with this. I believe that ensemble realized the importance of a meta game but that lesson was lost.

Is there such a difference between the youth of today and those of 10-20 years ago?
Personally, games without depth bore me, but I guess most of them like it simple.

I have more fun in 4 than 2 but I still play 2 more
