I Really Hope This Game Replaces AOE2: It's Just Better

Mods should pin this thread forever in case someone plays victim next time.

especially this comment

In Peru, the minimum wage is 1,200 soles, which is less than 300 dollars due to inflation. And that is the minimum salary for formal jobs, which less than 20% of the population have, the other 80% live on informal jobs and some earn 600 soles a month (less than $150), which does not even allow you to save for a computer that runs Age IV, at most Age II DE in 1vs1 or 2vs2, but in 4v4 games there is a lot of Lag.

A few years ago, 2015, the best computer for 650 dollars that you could buy with 2 GB of VRAM, was an Intel 4th generation (4 cores 4 threads), mid-range.

Currently, in 2023, with 800 dollars (almost 2600 soles) you can buy a mid-range Ryzen 5500 (6 cores 12 threads) with a 4 GB VRAM card, and that’s because Ryzen has become more profitable than Intel and every year they continue to release more and more. Well, at least in the capital, in vulnerable areas, almost 90% of the country, by a miracle you get water or even electricity.

I still dream of buying one of the last ones, but due to family situations we can hardly save money. Believe me, many would play AoeIV or other high-end RTS if they could, but they can’t. With my current computer, 4v4 games get stuck, and I can’t even use the Editor. If not, I would have already tried creating my own Joan of Arc campaign but for Age IV.

So yeah. I hope AoE4 replaces AoE2 and that AoE 2 has fewer players within the next few years. Brood War had to basically die for LotV to be THE Starcraft. Same with AoE2. It needs to be lower than AoE4
There is an easy solution:

 1. Urge microsoft to end support for AoE2.
 2. Shut down AOE2 HD and DE servers permanently.
 3. Ban discussions about AOE2 on the forum.

Then older players will die out and AOE4 will live happy ever after.

totally agree, I’m from Ecuador… it’s something related to what I commented in another thread

Each civ has AT LEAST two units with unique stats. Like Historical TW.
Historical TW basically every different unit has unique stats. And we are not talking about bonuses from factions and resources. It has far more unit types as well. Longer spear - a different unit. armor piercing - a different unit. Charge bonus - a different unit. They play and feel vastly different than a simple stats change. Some cavalry can rarely carry out a good charge. Some infantry melt their opponents quickly. Unlike the kind of stats change you describe where the units do the same thing but some do it better, many “stats change” in TW (because it has deeper mechanics and much more stats to tweak) drastically change how the unit works and effectively make “true unique” units like in AOE2. In AOE games where there are fewer stats, this is mostly done by giving units a different counter.

AOE2 also almost every unit has unique stats across civs because of different techtree. And it has unique units with very distinct functions.

In both games most factions have mostly stats-change units (like almost every game) and a few “really unique” units with very different functions from their counterparts.
AOE4 has less variations in the latter part (however it has started to get more, so you should object that. Eg janissary). It is not more comparable to TW games than AOE2.

Eventually AOE4 will have much more “true unique” units as in AOE2. I’ll wait for you to object it.

 1. reduce aoe2 from 40+ civs to just 1 from each part of the world. Down to like 6-8 make every civ more unique. Right now too many civs is the main thing keeping new players away from aoe2.
 2. increase even more image sprites at least 6 points of view, allow us to rotate the camera and always have your enemies TC facing away from each other.
 3. add unit veterancy and diminishing return.

It flopped bro, AOEIV failed xD
If it did succeed, we would see lots of updates, DLCs etc
But no!
AOE2 still going strong, its DLC are selling well too
They gotta milk the AOE2DE

So, yeah. Each civ changes up the unit stats drastically. That’s nondifferent from historical TW. Calling a unit “Hoplite” and “Triarii” doesn’t mean much. They’re just spearmen with different stats.
You can check the unit stats in TW!
They are all different!
AOE4 civs have the same units with the same stats, well except some, but most of them are the same xD

MS has different teams working on the Age games, pretty much how Paradox does it with their games, that’s why your previous Fifa/CoD comparison isn’t applicable. Each Age game gets equal development time, for a game such as AoE 2, it’s just a lot easier and faster to develop for as its devs started as modders and figured the engine out. Similar case with AoE 3 as Forgotten also started hiring people that know that game’s engine.

Because there are people who are like “Why should I play the new game if the current game I play gives me exactly what I want?”

But… AoE 4 has the same ‘problem’ as the playerbase of all Age game is of similar age.

… and that’s the part where some are wrong. AoE 4 didn’t flop or fail. It has good reviews and a healthy playerbase. RTS, however, is a slow genre to develop for and I feel like the days of modern gaming with Steam etc spoiled some in regards of expectations.

May I remind you that Conquerors for AoE 2 only came 11 months after the game’s release? Or that War Chiefs and Asian Dynasties for AoE 3 were one year apart?
As Relic is also busy with their original IP, they get support from FE to ensure that updates and new content still is regular.

hate to agree for the typical avalanche of responses but its normal here. so anyways… there a reason why roman dlc is being done on aoe 2 and not on other aoes. so yeah it fits.

Aoe4 didn’t fail. If you don’t want aoe4 to get better what are you even doing in these forums. Just another person that wants to see the game fail.

For a game that’s never had full support from the devs is the second most played aoe game.

All aoe games have there good points, its about microsoft making aoe4 the best it can be but they haven’t done much.

A lot of people complain how aoe2, aoe3, aoeo, aom done stuff better. These forums should be about improving them in aoe4.

Aoe2 community, if you dont play aoe2 any other age of empires game isnt good.

The international Age Of Empires community

This is the main aoe2 forum where if aoe2 isnt the best game your a bad person lol

Apart from announcing tournaments, AoEZone is rather a meme place inside the AoE community.

aoezone is a place for aoe2 fanboys, if it really was for the full age of empires community. It wouldnt be 90% about aoe2 and hopping for the other aoe games down fall

My main game is aoe4, i dont have aoezone book marked cause its got nothing to do with aoe4

Nah, trust me, within the AoE 2 community people don’t really take AoEZone seriously. There is a reason why the site is nicknamed “Drama zone” among AoE 2 players.

I play all Age games, 2 the most due to various reasons but don’t have Zone bookmarked either.

AoE2 sales data on steam in the last month is better than AoE4
How is it possible that no new players keep joining…
If there are no new players in AoE2, it is impossible for AoE4, which has been selling poorly recently, to have new players.

Because they like the game and it still have a community playing it. In Vietnam we still play the original AoE, the 90s version not the DE. The most skilled AoE gamers in our country born in 96 and 98.

True but that’s not really the same thing as saying I want it replaced.

I remember how some people whined and dumped all over it. And I was one of the people who was as saying shouldn’t write it off immediately. After it was released and I played it a bunch I decided it wasn’t the greatest. And I just replayed it again, it has gotten better age of siege is done :grinning:. Honestly if AgE of empires 3 wasn’t around or I didn’t really like it much I probably would play 4 just because AoE 2 is to hard to get into for non experienced players. But as is I find AoE 4 gameplay bland compared to AoE 3 so I mostly stick to 3 and try 4 periodically to see how it is coming along.
