I have played all versions of Age of Empires, and for me, AOE4 is my favorite, because it presents new challenges in a modern style that gives you a unique RTS experience.
You can easily notice the superiority of this version in terms of graphics, story, maps and user experience… In my opinion, it is good to develop this version according to market requirements and focus on improving gameplay before investing in adding new civilizations.
Due to the reason I mentioned - you don’t give up your top spot in the game where you’re already one of the best.
Well… Viper won Genesis and Hera won the Winter Championship at the beginning of 4’s life span.
Players like Jordan switched back almost immediately as they didn’t found the game to be fun for them and weren’t performing bad on the ladder.
While Viper btw almost exclusively plays AoE 2 on-stream, it is also known that he plays other RTS such as SC2 or AoE 3 as preparation for tournaments.
I highly rate viper and like his content but I don’t think he can compete with very good former SC2 players on AoE4. He won genesis yes, but he also tried to win the golden league. I’ve watched the top players closely from when AoE4 was released and in late december/early january 2022 marinelord looked like a tier above viper and hera.
I mean we are talking about a game that, when AoE4 came out, had 500k ladder accounts per season and during its hype years probably had an even bigger playercount. Also the game was literally designed for competitive 1on1s. There’s a reason most of the time the football nations with the biggest population win the title.
Viper only started to fully focus on AoE 4 when Golden League started. While he didn’t won it entirely, he still won Round 2 vs MarineLord with a 4:0. When he switched back to AoE 2 after GL concluded, you could see some AoE 4 habits that carried over. So if Viper continued to focus on AoE 4, he surely would’ve been on par with 4’s pros. I guess if Hera didn’t grind AoE 4 to death during his Subathon, he would be also on the same level.
He won in round two against Marinelord but lost the other three encounters which makes it 3-1. Viper did actually play SC2 quite competitively and was most likely a top50-100 player worldwide, judging from his youtube content. Top50-100 there wont make any money though, so I’d say it was a clever decision to focus on AoE2 as it probably suit his playstyle way more as well.
My point is that they did not absolutely sweep the winnings as you would expect. The operative word is “sweep.” As I keep mentioning, SC2 players caught up to them very quickly. This simply shows the user friendly and the intuitive nature of AoE4.
But wasn’t performing at a cash-making level.
You can have top spots in multiple games, especially if they are similar games. This was true for both SC2 and Broodwar when they were in the scene concurrently. Pros maintained top spots in both. If they could make more money by sticking around for both, they would have. But they didn’t.
Gamebyro (the same one that Bethesda used between TESIII: Morrowind and Fallout New Vegas)…
devs closed their eyes to everyone screaming for good changes, and new civs wont do the trick.

I have a lot a reasons why aoe2 != aoe4 (it’s inspired, but not equal):
but the reality is harsh:
Relic ###### hotkeys.
Hotkeys just different + different shift mechanics make it impossible to play both games.
It was said by everyone.
Either you switch to one game or you suck at both.
but most aoe2 pros did not even try to compete seriously at winter. They just ignored and trained to king of the desert4. (Most who is in MY twitch)
only Hera and Viper reward viewers with content.
The biggest attempts were after aoe2’s RB quals. Some (vinch, capoch, daut, tatoo(?)) tried to “jump” into departing train of ATR, having the chance only with open quals. thx. to ATR.
Mario Ovalle, a Columbian caster who before this video already casted AoE 4 for Red Bull… So what’s your point here?

I love these kind of post, when the game is failing hard people start trying to find reasons, some blame community, other devs, other the RTS players that actually buy the game lol
The game fails because It is a poorly made game, with poorly graphics /details, very simple mechanics, with a huge amount of bugs at release, with very few unique units, when people look at age of empires they want a immersive medieval game, instead you get a patch with purple colors and fantasy stuff lol.
Stop blaming the gamers, we are customers and we deserves a quality product.
yeah ik but I learnt from this forum and reddit one that there a big portion of player that are willing to defend relic and aoe 4 even though it makes questionable decisions. They should be adressed as part of the problem too.

I agree with what you say about aoe2, too many civs, a bit too hard to control everything, dark age is meh. Still thats what we know and play out of nostalgia and maybe frienships.
I played aoe2 when i was a kid and agin when it came out on xbox a few months ago.
We need to optimize the controls, they are 90% there. Personally i dont want a new game, just a better version of the old one. Improve and add(not civs, if it was up to me id have like 8 max)
so where is the rest of it? facebook is a ghost town, discord is almost ded, this forum is relatively niche, steam one is very private on its number but duno the activity on it
