Well, Tower of the Sultan is somewhat similar to your idea, but in the end, it is rarely seen in the game.
Sounds like the Tower of Sultan needs a buff like adding emplacements and arrow slits per garrisoned unit.
As a cheat unit (tricks enabled), it would be fine.
But as a common unit, I don’t think so. Historically, I don’t think any medieval kingdom has built anything like this. In fact, putting a countertrebuchet with something in front of it would be contrary to its design, which is supposed to leave room for the arm to stretch.
The trebuchet’s arms doesn’t go much past 90 degrees upright after firing. In fact in the image, the arm can almost go 180 to almost on top of the arrow slits! I probably should used a smaller traction trebuchet on the back.
Also, as for the historical authenticity of the unit, the Tower of the Sultan is complete fantasy, not to mention Malians using gunpowered weapons.
The inspiration is a medieval version of the Assyria Siege Tower.
