Ideas for Balance changes in 2024

my sweet summer child. you still believe in the existance of the balance team

There’s a lot more evidence for the existence of a balance team than say, a graphics team.

Like them or not, we got a ton of balance changes last year. Can’t really say that about much, if anything, else.

In fact, balance changes are one thing that I hope can be kept few and far between this year.

So who is the in charge of balance change then?

So Ornlu made a vid about how power creep is affecting the game and some changes to fix that:

Funny that he does not mention Mongols once, despite all the complaining about them.

Japanese - Get a new CA UU that replaces generic CA and have +2 attack bonus vs archer except skirmisher. Accuracy is +20% than generic but also cost is +5 wood and +5 gold more. Training time is also fixed 33 sec for both standard and elite.

Khmer - Lose husbandry. No idea why this tech is so much common. To compensate get Mahouts as a regional tech that gives all elephant units +10% speed. Other civs that get the tech are Bengalis, Dravidians, Malay (Don’t worry there is a nerf for them later) and Persians. War Elephant speed is reduced from 0.8 to 0.7.

Portuguese - Lose Bloodlines or gold discount revert to 15%.

Incas - Food discount is flat 15%.

Hindustanis - Grand Trunk Road doesn’t benefit gold miners. Instead it benefits Caravanserai speed boost increased to 30% from 20%.

Malians is fine.

Saracens market cost -100 wood become the Team Bonus market cost -40%. Foot archer +2 attack bonus vs building become a civ bonus.

Slavs - Lose their last civ bonus where Monks move 20% faster. Let them be the only civ with faster farmer with bonus for scorpion that have FU or FU+ Cavalier. So Romans lose Bloodlines and Centurion gets +20 HP. UT also becomes cheaper and doesn’t benefit knight line. Khmer as said above, lose Husbandry.

Malay - Knight is removed from tech tree. (Bengalis and Dravidians = Welcome to the club).

Changed some things after feedback and as for the recent tournament and Ornlu’s video.

He does mention mongols in his state of the civs video he released a few weeks ago. This video he said could be considered an addendum to his star of the civs videos.

In his state of the civs he mentioned how Mongol SL are too good, and that if you locked the SL HP bonus behind a UT that’d replace nomads, then you’d need that strategy.

Also I think in Ornlu was focusing on more recent changes In this most recent video. Mongols getting SL is like four years old now???

What if…what if…what if…Really shocked I’d never thought of this before…give Japanese CA a small bonus vs UUs? If it’s still too good in the mid game then maybe just HCA, or maybe it only starts in imperial age.

What about giving Japanese UU like Bulgarian Konnik but as Cavalry archer instead.

As build, it’s cavalry archer; down once and it become samurai as it is (might need change in cost, stat and/or bonus damage for balance).

Hey remember when keep it simple was a good motto. Wait it still is. Let Japanese have regular horse archers!

Nice on… 20 characters

Why not give Samurai the Ratha treatment that they were originally planned to have, where they can switch between ranged and melee? Ranged switch means they can reliably take on ranged UU, and if the base damage is low enough then it won’t overshadow the melee form in other situations.

Good change in general. Except for Aztecs… I don’t want Aztetc’s Monks to get nerfed, I think they are fine like they are because the civ has many weaknesses already.

Franks also got nerfed recently. I don’t think it’s necessary to nerf them again.

No change for Lithuanians? I thought you love them.

Ya that’d be fine too. I’m not saying we should strictly disobey the history of that civ. But in game they need some decent unit to fill that knight like role. Like melee rathas available in stable with 1 melee armor and not taking any bonus damage from skirms could be a start.

I’m not saying civs were intentionally adjusted to be broken based on history. But changes they received to match historical accuracy made some of them broken at some point. Mongol getting lancers was one such change. Eco bonuses should be adjusted when you’re trying to force historical accuracy this way. Mongols should get a diminishing hunt bonus like Gurjaras. Likewise Bengalis can miss a mobile knight like unit if they get a strong food eco bonus and elephants get a rework. Otherwise they definitely some replacement unit.

he’s referring to the people responsible for balance changes we receive…
