Ideas for Imperial Units

For historical references? heck yes!!

I must say, however, to fully experience a historical feeling, there are too little ages. In a perfect historcal context, you would have those Ages and time-frames:

Age I - 1492 - 1530 (the rise of gunpowder, Age of Aztecs, Incas, Conquistadors, 1st Ottoman Siege of Vienna, Landsknechts, German Peasant War, German armored City-Militias fighting city wars, Turkish incursions into Hungary and Upper Austria and Carinthia)

Age II - 1530 - 1630 (Second phase of the ottoman-habsburg war, 30 years war, 80 years war, second stage of the conquest of south america, English civil war, Akbar the Great’s times, Sengoku Jidai in Japan, Chinese transition from Qing to Ming, Ivan the great rules in Russia and the civil war afterward, French Wars of Religion, Uskok war between Venice and Austria, the Island-Wars between the Ottomans and Venice)

Age III - 1630 - 1715 (Second stage of the 30 years war (armour for infantry gets obsolete), the Diluge in Poland, second siege of Vienna (the winged Hussars arrive!), Cossack uprising of Chmelniczky, Great Northern War, Spanish War of Succession, first Jacobite wars, English-Dutch war and the glorious revolution)

Age IV - 1715 - 1779 (Austrian War of Succession, 7 years war, American War of independence, Russo-Turkish War, partition of Poland, first phase of the reolutionary wars in Europe (that is Napoleons campaigns in Italy and Egypt as well as the European Power’s struggle to end the french revolution)

Age V - 1779 - 1815 (the second phase of the revolutionary wars in Europe, Napoleon’s coronation, restructuring of Europe by Napoleon, Napoleons campaign in Russia, the “Befreiungskriege” in Germany, Napoleons Defeat in Spain, Russia and Germany, last phase of the Habsburg-Ottoman wars with the desastrous battle of Karansebes, russo-turkish wars, russo-persian wars)

Age VI - 1815 - approx 1853 (revolutions in 1848, Hungarian insurrection, first stage of the balkan wars, greek wars of independence, crimean war, French Second Empire, first stages of the italian war of independence, first Carlist wars in Spain)

So, you see, all of those times (and sooooooooo much more, I ofc. do not know all of the conflicts of the time, mostly only the ones with immediate Austrian participation as I’m from Austria) would require more Ages and waaaaaaaaaaaaay more civs, therefore, I’d rather try to create different mods that cover those times (like I do at the moment with Sealing for the first two periods, which can be somewhat combined as for tactics etc.) individually, with enabling specific times by specific mods.

I think it’s somewhat appaling to see e.g. Rodeleros battling British redcoats or ottoman Sipahis charging against Krupp Canons  however, focusing on one period at the time, with then regarding the unit upgrades as promotions rather than as time progressions, seems more natural to me… but that might be my opinion, you might have a completely different one and that fits just fine  If you need inspirations for unit skins for a specific nation for a specific time, just call!

Hi Enierheler,

they look amazing! Only thing I’d somehow change is disabling the “archaic” units after age 2, bc. by the time of the 1700s, they all disappear ^^ Don’t know if you want to be that historical as to not use them when you get to the napoleonic time though… that is up to you, dear sir

As for the skins, they look all plausible for the time and era  maybe you could change the look of the Wild Goose to look more like one of those soldiers down below:

Maybe you go for the light blue uniform with the bicorne?

Good idea, but for a reboot. This game is already what it is.

Interesting, but does a Officer uniform fit into the Wild Goose infantry? The Irish legion seems better, but is light infantry. And that is the aesthetics I’m using for some light infantry/chasseur Units and the Wild Goose is Heavy Infantry. I’m trying to keep things visually simple/congruent with the base Game mechanics as a main reference.

What does the Napoleonic Irish infantry look like? Or is this chasseur uniform the main/one for Irish infantry? If it is, it is a very easy update to do.

Ok! you got me. this guys look cool for line infantry

Yes. I think keep the base Game as it is, only cosmetic chances for this mod. The “imperial” look is for show/visual change only

I see what You mean with the light blue Wild Geese. But I like the irish Legion uniform more.

It seems Spanish Wild Geese near the 1700s where red on the coats.

I would also like the Imperial Age to be more unique for each civilization and in general. For example, exclusive Imperial Age cards, unique technologies like the telegraph, etc., because in reality, Age V doesn’t have any truly unique aspects besides the super strong upgrades.

If you think about it, there are no unique units for Age V, no unique technologies in the arsenal, or any upgrades other than simply generic buffs.

The only unique building in this age is the Capitol, and it’s only available in Europe civs.

Unfortunately, game development has supposedly ended, and we wouldn’t be able to alter the game without affecting the balance and the current design of the mechanics.

We would also need to establish which specific period the Imperial Age represents. Perhaps the last three or four decades of the 1800s?

I like to think that the game ends right when the American Civil War begins or shortly after, where the boundary is marked between the old forms of warfare where there were armies in formation like in the movie ‘The Patriot’, and changes towards modern warfare where formations no longer make sense.

Good idea! Maybe an extended/reimagined mod will cover these ideas better, some unique Age V techs sound interesting. New Units and stuff. I guess almost everything is possible.

For now I will keep the cosmetics only, to have a clear outcome. That cosmetics can be added to an additional mod further in line.

I’ll reply to you some time later, I’m currently at work  but I can say, a lot of them look great!!! <3

One thing that I would change, though, is giving the German Skirms no “Pickelhaube” in Age V, as this only comes around 1840 (or even later, I’m not too sure), and to change the Giant Grenadiers to look like the Wurttemberg Grenadiers (they were fighting for the french as part of the Rhineland contingents, so they’d still be somewhat considered a mercenary unit), bc. the way you portray them now, they served in the 7 Years War and the War of the Austrian Succession, so approx. 50 years befor Napoleon

They’d look like this:

And another point I’d point out:

Why not change the pikemen/halberdeers to Spontooneers? Like for example this one for the brits? Making them somewhat much more expensive, but allowing them to boost the troops? Like the Trabants from the Saxon Royal House?

Yes. Actually, for the Brits I had the guys on the left in mind. But we can discuss that later.
