If every civ had a unique Castle design

Fasil Ghebbi is anachronistic. I am now looking into something Aksumite.

Still, thatā€™s like saying the Empire State Building was built by the British.

Tbh Fasil Ghebbi despite being from the 1600s looks a lot like some aksumite buildings

Either way your choice is better

I donā€™t know why it is necessary to keep the default castle when we can have better options.

Agree.

If we can find a suitable one for the Mongols, for example, referring to AbeJinā€™s mod creation in the AoE2HD Steam Workshop, then there is also fine for the Huns.

Here are the better choices.

Basically, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese castles are good to refer their medieval gatehouses.

Himeji Castle is the best choice to be the reference. Not only will the times not be too late, but it will also be magnificent and spectacular.
Nagoya Castle, Osaka Castle, Kumamoto Castle, Fushimi Castle, etc. are all good choices, but the time may be too late.
The default castle is a mixture, with some elements that are distinctly not common to Japanese castles.

Will using old alpha-beta version of castle be really bad?

yes its bad.
Word limit.

Isnā€™t the beta castle much bigger than the current one?

They will feel lower, less massive than current castles.

They still look 4x4, compare with trees, but being lower can be deceiving.

In some early alpha versions there were some huge castles ā€“ 8-by-8, I think. But the castles @SMUM15236 posted (from a later alpha, not a beta, I think) are 4-by-4, and a bit shorter than the ones in game now.

I understand alpha-beta version. But I donā€™t see any problem reusing HD Italians castle which according to wiki a real world castle and beta DE central Asian castle. Central Asian architecture is shared by only 2 civs for now and a Cuman fortress is hard to find. So bringing back beta DE Central Asian Castle for Cumans is totally fine imo.

I think thatā€™s alpha and early beta.

Scaling can be done. Although these castle models look really bad tbh.

My problem with it is that itā€™s obviously a mod graphic pieced together from recoloured versions of other buildings, and it looks more like a pile of boxes than a castle. Iā€™m very glad they remade the Mediterranean architecture set entirely, although unfortunately the castle still looks kind of like a pile of boxes to me.

Quoting myself to follow up on the huge alpha version castles. Here are some pictures.

Western European:

Central European:

East Asian (looks a bit different in Castle and Imperial Age):

The Alcazar of Segovia isnā€™t very representative, its style is unique in Spain as it was renovated by king Philip II to reflect the castles of central Europe. I suggest this one better.

Castle of Loarre (built during the 11th and 13th centuries).

Oh, I didnā€™t know that. Iā€™ll consider the change. Thanks.

Iā€™d rather they get Himeji

Itā€™s based on Krak des Chevaliers, built by crusades, so I think they should get a new one as well.

Wouldnā€™t it be better if they got a ruined castrum? To go along with their wonder and the Roman castle.

Edit: Found the Cairo Citadel (the one with a Hagia Sophia lookalike) and Al-Qahira. Maybe either of them could be the new Saracen castle, or, if the civ gets split, the Cairo Citadel could go to Egyptians and the Al-Qahira to the Yemeni.

Then the Krak des Chevaliers could go to the scenario editor, since I kinda doubt FE would make a ā€œCrusadersā€ civ.

We already got what I imagine FE had in mind for a Crusader civ with the Sicilians

Thatā€™s a palace not a castle. Chinese didnā€™t build castles but they did build walls and gatehouses or gate towers, and we have to draw inspirations from those. Hereā€™re some to draw inspiration from:

Gate tower on the walls of Nanjing, built during the Ming dynasty

Guard towers along the walls of Xian, built during the Ming

Gate towers of Jiayu Pass, again built during the Ming

A gate tower of the Diaoyu Fortress, built during the Southern Song against the Mongols

Ruins of the Hailongtun Fortress, initially built during the Southern Song and later expanded in Ming, but destroyed in late Ming due to the Bozhou rebellion

These are the best preserved ones that I could find.

If needed, a lazy but effecient method is to simply use AoE3 Shogunate and AoE4 Barbican of the Sun as the models for the Japanese castle and the Chinese castle respectively.

The AoE3 Shogunate is also said to be based on Himeji Castle.

Besides the Barbican of the Sun, it can also refer to the design of the AoE4 Great Wall Gatehouse, but as an AoE2 building, it has to be thicker to make the used space more square rather than obviously rectangular, and the house above can also be changed to the double-layer structure of AoE4 Imperial Palace which is visually more magnificent.

Thatā€™d be like the unique Roman castle then. Itā€™s basically a glorified wall section as far as I can tell.

Actually, a supply depot for Hadrianā€™s Wall. So, not even a fortress. But still somewhat related.
