Is nobody else concerned about the population limit?

That is before I was even born man! AOE 1 is an old game. They made it with 75pop because that’s what the technology was able to run OMG!!!

Many players hated AOE3 pop mechanics and you just mentioned it!
True fans of the AOE don’t talk about it! Remember that!

If you don’t know please don’t say something that is completely useless.
Thanks!

I mean… I agree. I feel like you are arguing with a bunch of people who already agree with you. That’s what I’m saying - they should try to push boundaries and not simply meet them.

200pop is generally the universal standard for most rts resource driven games. The 200 pop allows “zerg” units to remain balanced. Converting the price an army of expensive units into cheap trash spam, cheap trash would always win if the population was past 200. In practice cheap zerg spam is great early, but becomes weaker late game until resources become used up. The removal of 200 pop would result in a balance nightmare.

50 was the limit with AOE1.

And still, it was fun, but it was fun because we didn’t know anything better then. We got frequently frustrated because the limit was so easily reached.

But, why not giving us the choice. Many people like to play at 200. Let it be the standard pop for AOE4 (campaigns, ranked games, …) and give the choice for casual games between friends or for peoples that play mostly against AI.

Did the game launch already? As far as I know it didn’t, and the only publicly discussable version of the game is the Technical Stress Test and whatever Microsoft has officially released on streams, promos, etc. Nobody in the public knows what the final game will have

I know that video is off-topic in that it’s not talking about pop count limit, but since it’s used as an example of apparent dev failings: just because the Xbox website ‘revealed the hotkeys for AoE4,’ it doesn’t mean the game won’t have non-AoE4 options at launch, or that the grid system is the only choice, or that we won’t be able to customize hotkeys/grids/etc. in AoE4; nor is it necessarily a complete and comprehensive list of what the final game will have. In fact, the note in the upper-right says:

For all we know, this could very well take you to a screen that has multiple preset options, similar to AoE2:DE where you can choose between the new “DE” version of hotkeys, or the old “HD (2013)” version, or customize keys until your heart’s content.

So, for AoE4, even though that Xbox website says, “Age of Empires IV Hotkeys,” it doesn’t mean the game won’t include AoE3, AoE2, or other hotkey presets. Maybe it’s like if AoE2:DE posted a screenshot of “AoE2: Definitive Edition Hotkeys” with no indication of other hotkey sets that are included with it. The statement is still valid, and it gives no indication that other hotkey sets exist, yet here are AoE2:DE’s choices:

I’m not saying AoE4 will have other options, but I think it’s a little presumptuous to assume there won’t be any other options and to write the game off because of one screenshot or Tech Stress Test that doesn’t necessarily give the full story. Unless they show screenshots of the final UI showing no other choices exist, then any claim to say devs aren’t giving what players the ability to play how they want is just pure conjecture at this point. That goes for hotkeys, imo, as well as Population Limits. We, simply, do not know what the released game will have or what their post-launch plans are

lol this just sounds like cope,

I think we all know from what we’ve heard from the devs so far that they aren’t planning on adding any of these highly requested things to the game for launch:

  • zoom levels similar to definitive editions
  • increased pop cap
  • fully customizable hotkeys

I would love to be wrong so feel free to say i told you so when the game launches.

 Maybe coping mechanism kicking in… but I just like to give the benefit of the doubt, or at least not read between the lines and assume something will happen with 100% certainty when the full story hasn’t been given yet

  • zoom levels similar to definitive editions - I think you’re probably right, unfortunately. But maybe they have super legit reasons for not doing it or for not revealing the game has the capability yet
  • increased pop cap - For ranked game, probably correct… and that’s likely fine for the most part. However, we 100% do not know if “200” will be the limit in unranked MP games betw/ friends and SP random map type games
  • fully customizable hotkeys - Maybe, but I’ll give the benefit of the doubt and withhold my judgment until the game is released. I’m not personally aware of any blog, podcast, or video that definitively states the hotkey situation is doomed

That is what ranked players are concerned. They are serious.
Casual players seek fun and enjoyability. If you read my comment, I specifically said 200 pop is a ranked culture!

AOE II allows you to choose your pop cap at the start of each game, dot know why it would be a problem.

AOE IV have a feature where you can start on higher res, yet how many people in competitive mode use it?

So the argument that by having it will give disadvantage is wrong. Some people don’t play competitively and play for other reasons. 700 pop cap is amazing in AOE II to build giant armies, have giant battles and have big messy games. It’s fun but single player. Not competitive for sure.

im not arguing against you btw haha

I hope it’s no problem, but we don’t know yet. Two different games

Since I hit the 200 cap most games during stress test, I hope it’s not the max for ranked either

I wish it was 500

sad

They have to put some limitation at some point.

Just like:

  • units attack
  • units range
  • units texture
  • units mass
  • units speed
  • map size
  • zoom level
  • population limit
  • naration integration
  • game mecanic
  • the number of processeur usage
  • the computer requirement

200 is ok. Thinking more than that is just too much.

True, since every units is solid has rock. XD

The game weakness is shown when there is too much units in game and in batle.

The units path findind just glich, ally units get stuck in choke point or on the batlefield, not able to reach target because of unit rigidity.

is it too much? i think we just havent had the opportunity to have more

For you, or everyone?

Is anyone able to report on what the population caps are for single-player and unranked random map type games in the released version of the game?

200 pop cap for every mode (at least non-campaign, still haven’t checked that). Single player skirmish against AI, multiplayer against humans (unranked included), multiplayer against AI/mixed… all have a 200 pop cap. And as far as I’ve seen, it doesn’t matter the amout of players (will check biggest map with few players next time).

Also, the game setup options are basically the same as in the stress test. Still no player color selection, for example.

What can I say, 200 pop cap without the option to change it (at least for unranked matches) is a shame in my opinion. Especially when we can do it in Age of Empires II Definitive Edition. I understand the limit for ranked, but the rest? Just let people play how they want.

That’s unfortunate. Okay, definitely holding off my purchase then. Zoom level and pop count were big ones for me, and half-assumed all would be well in the final product. Ooh, now I need to find the thread about over-talkative units and see if that got addressed by adding an option or updating the sound files.

It’s ok for matchmaking but I’d be very surprised if we aren’t able to make our own lobbies with up to 500 like in AOE2.
