This is a screenshot from the mongol campaign,
credit to AgeofNoob for the screenshot
I counted and there are more than 200 military units alone being controlled by the AI
each cluster of troops has at least 30 units in it, and in this screenshot alone there are 7 groups
so theres at least 210 troops here, not to mention those not in this one screen
just think of the epic scale battles we could have had…
The pop cap is set to 200 mainly for 4 vs 4 (1600 total units), the map editor will probably let you place however many units you wan’t or spawn infinite units with triggers.
Managing huge numbers of units is probably to difficult for most players.
Unit cap would also affect map resources and therefore map design. Imagine the upkeep of having 400+ units each in a 4 vs 4 game. No amount of gold, wood and stone could support that. The map would need to be plastered with resources.
A more simplistic resource collection like in StarCraft or BfME would be needed for more massive armies and population to support them.
An alternative would be adding a multiplier for existing resources. Example: Instead of a single tree being 150 wood, it could increase to 500 wood or so if you go higher than 200 pop.
First of all, I love the game. But me and my friends like to make bigger battles with more than 200 units. Please add the option for more units(like in the Definitive Edition in AOE2 with max. 500). I’ll hope they will add this soon.
Would be cool, but I the game is already uses a lot of ressources on most pcs.
I think using a 500pop cap would cause an insane amount of lag. Also there are balance problems that could come up with it too since civs are quite different and you can start to see more the differences as more build orders come up.
Maybe 250 pop cap wouldn’t be bad though since some units cost more pop.
They will probably have that be a mod that you can have for custom games. Or just have that be a feature in a custom game.
The 200 pop is a standard AoE Thing that has been there since the beginning and the game is designed and build from the ground up for 200 pop.
I too wouldn’t mind a custom game mode that balances the game for 500-1000 units and somehow doesn’t crash the game.
Like making units cheaper, or rebalancing some units that might be op when overmassed beyond 200pop. Imagine fighting 300 bombards or 300 mangonels lol.
Some people already managed to increase the population limit with very little modding.
What they discovered is that there are a few things that can crash the game.
Like if you task 300 villagers to construct a building the game crashes.
Surprisingly you can select more than 200 units at once. I wonder why they allowed that, I mean the population limit is 200 so you can’t have more anyway.
Dude-- even on AoE2 when playing with 500 pop with 8 players the game still lags online-- what would be the difference here? Not like were not use to it. – Just because it cannot run on all computers doesnt mean it shouldn’t be in the game. This is akin to saying – “Wellllll we shouldn’t add in ultra settings because not all PCs can handle it.”
I keep seeing people bring up performance, but that’s kind of a weak argument. If your PC cant handles that population, you just wouldn’t choose that option, right? Pretty easy fix. Also, unless your PC is really old, I’m pretty sure a slight increase, even if it just to 500, won’t cripple you. I actually know it since I have already modded my version of AOE4 to give me a high cap via trainers. I cant get my population well into the thousands without seeing performance hits that are of note. If you have a 970 or better, you’ll be fine. Are you all forgetting its 2021 and games have had larger unit caps for years at this point. I mean, in total war, some of the UNITS have a population of 200, let alone the armies. All people want here is an option. If your PC cant handle it, don’t use it. With that logic, they shouldn’t have high graphics settings either, because “someones pc might not be able to run it”
Hey guys, am new to this site but thought it might be a good idea to bring up the population limit in AOE 4…
In AOE 2 (which is my favourite) you could have up top 500
AOE 3, you can only have 200- without adding mods on
and this new one is the same-
any one know if there is a way to change it to a higher population limit?
if not i believe this should be looked into on a future update.
thanks
