Is rebinding keys cheating?

I am considering rebinding my mouse wheel to right click (using my mouse software.) This would allow me to use the wheel to click faster than is humanly possible, something that could be advantageous to say get a vill back to the tc while a scout is trying to block her. Is this type of rebinding legal? If it is can you use a macro to do the same thing? I assume the answer to both to be no, but just gotta check, never liked the click fast to save the vill minigame.

No, it would be only cheating if you use macros (i.e. programmable commands should you use a gaming mouse)

Even then I hardly see how this could be practical and yield some positive results. Unless being extremely complex such as coding a bot to automatically micro your units (which is far beyond what such software allows).

Even a quick startup button (to instantly give all the orders) would be very limited as macros do not control the mouse movement and couldn’t predict where resources are.

If rebinding keys wasn’t considered fair, there wouldn’t be such options in the game.

Well, when I started ranked, I programmed a key on my mouse that jumped to TC and immediately queued up vills at the same time. I meanwhile don’t do that anymore

One button press instead of a few ones (only the first villager matters for the timing). Which you can already do by pressing both keys at once with a tiny delay (fingers misaligned) so that the jump to TC is first.

That really doesn’t sound like much.

In the second part of my question I was asking about macros. I have a logitech g key keyboard, so I could bind a g key to right click real fast. Would that be cheating?

Nah, binding one key to another - even on a mouse or anywhere else - is totally fine. What’s not okay is programming macro sequences; for example, using one key to jump to the TC and queue multiple actions.

How about binding a key that when held down clicks right click like 100 times a second. Technically it’s just one key to one key, but is suspect this wouldn’t be allowed.

Just to save someone else from taking time trying to find all the T&Cs like I’ve already done, the OP’s topic was originally posted in the “Ask for Help” section, where I gave links to all that policy type stuff I could find: Rebinding keys, what is considered cheating? - #4 by Darkness01101

Aside from that, carry on with the discussion! I don’t have anything to add to it. Sounds like other folks here will innately have your answers

I struggle to think of any situation where it might be even remotely practical and give any advantage.

Pooplord recently released a video about a cheat/bug where fast clicking is mandatory for it to trigger. However, even much slower clicking—let’s say every 14.7 seconds—could still give you an unfair advantage.

Ah, this thread makes me think of so many ways to improve your play in an uncompetitive manner.

Thanks for the info on that vid… I see that channel is comprised of lots of tricks and exploits. Things that a speed-runner might uncover and take advantage of in FPS games. Makes me wonder if OP is wanting to do stuff like that… noncompetitive-minded exploits

Villager timer thst just beeps or blinks every n seconds. Could get out of sync with the game though, especially after techs have been researched.

It’s not too difficult to get it in perfect sync, but I don’t think it’s necessary to go into details. It’s clear this falls into the category of an unfair advantage—a form of cheating that could lead to a ban if detected.

Any programmable button click which performs more than one action at a time, or in sequence, is cheating. It would get you banned from any tournament and should be avoided.

Binding the right click to a mouse wheel or a keyboard key, to me is a grey area. It is technically 1 click per action, so it is not cheating in the way a macro would be, but I would caution you against it. Left click and right click are not hotkeys. The game does not intend to permit you to bind those buttons to a keyboard key, and an argument can be made that utilizing an outside program to circumvent that limitation is not a fair thing to do. You are part of the higher skilled community, where fair competition is not only paramount; it is also scrutinized in a way that lower skilled competition is not. Opinions would be divided as to the ethics of such use, and the advantage it provides is not worth the risk to your reputation. It’s a really cool idea, but I would leave this one alone.
