I got up to 175 pop and got message about ‘house limit’.
But I could build catapults just fine.
If there’s a ‘house limit’ how do you increase your pop cap? I did NOT have a very big army when I hit that ‘house limit’.

Yes, there is a house limit.
It also possible to increase thé pop Cap, with Building new town centers on thé settlements. And to upgrade your town centers with a tech they have.
The actual population limit is 1000 but you can only get 160 population with houses.
Every Fortified Town Centre gives 25 population (30 for Isis, 30 for Citadel, 35 for Isis Citadel) so you can calculate how many Town Centres you need.
btw. there are 3 Settlements per player on a normal random map.
If the warning was that you had reached the house limit, that just means that you’d already built the max number of houses, not that you needed them. You weren’t necessarily anywhere near the population limit.
What is the pop limit? I assumed it was 200 like AOE3.
1000 as I wrote before but it’s very hard to reach in any normal match.
You basically have to conquer almost the entire map of a 12 player game for that.
The pop limit is essentially limitless, but in practice, it’s whatever is allowed by the max number of houses + your Town Centres.
I just had three fortified town centers and every upgrade and all houses.
And I could only have 236 pop cap. If I hadn’t of built a Titan gate I’d have been clobbered.
In most matches you should be able to get 235 population.
160 from houses + 3*25 from Town Centres.
Most maps generate 3 Settlements per Players (starting Town Centre + 2 more).
If both you and your enemy have 3 Town Centres then you both have the same population.
235 is effectively less then AoE3 though because all military units cost at last 2 population.
Especially less then AoE1/2/4 where almost all units cost 1 population.
There is a reason why the double house limit mod is one of the most popular mods.
Yes I noticed catapults seem to ignore pop cap under certain circumstances, but i assumed i was seeing things lol
It seem that cap block unit build is that you can build units as long as cap not reach limit, even it would break the limit.
1 free population is enough to train a 5 population unit.
That should most certainly be classified as a bug lol.
I’m pretty sure that’s intentional.
It’s the same way in AoE3 where it’s even more important because home city shipments can have a lot of population.
What would make the most sense to me is that there was a house limit, but you could raise it with every Town Center you build the way your population cap goes up. The way I look at it is that the Town Center represents the administrative center for each town in your empire, so the housing limit should represent how many houses within a town that a Town Center’s administration can handle. Therefore, if you have more Town Centers in your empire, you should be able to administer more houses overall.
I think some mods already implement a system like this, since I’ve noticed that when I have them activated, my housing limit goes up after I build my second Town Center.
Except in aoe3 the skip limit only applies to shipments and big buttons, not to every unit and it makes sense to be that way.
