Other games have it, why doesn’t age of empires 2, the most popular in the franchise ?
The control scheme already exists for consoles, how hard is it for them to copy paste it over to the PC version ?

There is no official statement on pretty much anything. The developers are very silent.
We can only make assumptions. AoE2 has the oldest codebase so adding anything is harder. AoE2 also has the most radical fanbase so having a build in feature like auto economy, which you kinda need when you play with a controller, could make people riot, even if it’s limited to controller play.
Both AoE4 and AoM have it.
And aoe2 already has it on console, and you can crossplay PC/console
There’s no reason for it not to be added.
I know that.
Also I just told you 2 possible reasons. But that’s just a guess since the developers never stated anything official.
Neither of those reasons you listed make any sense.
The game is actively developed with DLC after DLC.
The console ports already have the control scheme, and can crossplay with PC so why does it matter there’s those auto options ?
You don’t seem to understand how fanatic large parts of the AoE2 player base can be. Having an option to automate even the smallest part of the game always leads to a huge outcry in the community. Even things like the farm queue had many haters when it was first introduced. There is also a group of people that think Consoles ruin video games and that adding controller support will always lead to the game being dummed down to please console players.
The other reason I mention, the technical one, is hard to know as an outside. AoE2 is build on a code base from almost 30 years ago. I don’t know how similar the Console version or how much of the core code they have changed for it. The console version doesn’t support any mods for example and doesn’t come with a scenario editor. That all doesn’t mean it’s impossible but it might be harder then you think.
The developers probably don’t want to invest significant effort into something that a lot of people will hate.
The AoM, AoE3 and AoE4 communities are a lot more accepting to changes like that. In AoMR you can even use auto economy when playing with mouse and keyboard, and it’s also the only game with auto queue. Those 3 games are also using way more modern engines which make it easier to add things like that. AoE3 doesn’t have a console version yet though so there is still no controller support for it. But I feel like it’s more likely for AoE3 to get controller support on PC then for AoE2.
tl;dr
I don’t argue against controller support in AoE2. I’m just telling you why I think they haven’t added it yet.
None of this is relevant. If I want to play unranked modes or campaign with a controller why would anyone care ?
They did it for AoE4, aom, it will come to 2
Fanatic AoE2 fans are not particularly rational. They see every change as a threat to their game. After the huge wave of negative reactions to the 3 Kingdoms DLC the developers have been afraid of adding anything that anyone could potentially dislike.
Maybe when 3 Kingdoms is long enough in the past that most people have forgiven them they might start adding more “risky” things again. But first they feel like they have to prove that they can make “classic” AoE2 content. They now announced a DLC where every new civilisation only has 1 unique unit for example.
There’s crossplay and it is not considered that Xbox players have a huge advantage (the contrary, mouse seems superior, even with console automations), so I would say it is a no-problem
At the end of the day ranked uses ELO
You get matched with people your skill. Only a sore loser would point to the other players input method as to why they lost
Have you seen hardcore multiplayer people talk? They get pretty salty very fast about anything minor detail and then forget about it (like the animal food not decaying if kill by military, that was a funny complaint from them). But at the end of the day the developers doesn’t seem to care that much or they would have stopped adding the features that “ruins” the game a long time ago.
They added support to Mac, so Linux and Controller Support may very well be the next step
They only added controller support to AoE4 in the last couple months
Well, then that it’s good news that it is something that might be on their radar for AoE2 too, we’ll have to wait and see
Only got added in June.
As a community we need to be loud so the Devs hear us
unlikely, I strongly doubt the devs even read anything that goes on in this forum
They probably do read the forums even if they don’t answer directly, you are just pissed they haven’t done what you particularly want so far despite spamming it at every chance you can. Please stop spreading negativity that was uncalled for in this thread.
obvious bugs, that have been reported multiple times in this forum (eg the completely broken filter in lobbies), have remained unaddressed for years. Even simple things like broken translations stay broken forever.
So either they don’t read them or just don’t give the slightest of shits.
they are stealing the game I bought from me, without even enable the simplest of features that are available to them at the click of a button on steam. Yeah, I am pissed.
the feature mentioned in this chat has been requested for ages now, it’s available in different versions of this game. it’s part of the greater issue that plagues this game: unresponsive devs.
You say they are unresponsive, yet you seem to enjoy screaming into void (as if you expected deep down that they really listen).
Why try so hard to comment about everything if you expect nothing?
i’m hoping that I’ll be proven wrong. I have tried this forum, reddit, official support requests, and steam refund requests, if there are any other ways you know of that might get them to move their arses on the things that are objectively broken (eg lobbies, chat filter, translations, crashes, version control, glitches), please let me know.
because at its heart aoe2 is one of the best games I know, and I love it. I think you are right and I have a shred of hope left
The developers often end up adding things to the game that were suggested by people here or in other places. For example most DLC they added were civilisations that were leading in popularity polls. That is true for all games in the series.
Also they actually do add features and other things people often ask for. Not sure why controller support is not one of those things. Their posts in social media are full of people asking for controller support so they are definitely aware that people want it.
