It has been 7 years since the release of Age of Empires 4, it's time to release a variant version

We know that Age of Empires 4 has variant civilizations. But now it’s almost 10 years old. I hope designers can prepare a variant of it and prepare the next work, Age of Empires 5.

It’s been, uh, less than 4 years.

seems like you have mixed up dates with the Release in the pants date

He may have confused the dates but I see no circus. The bottom line is he wants an Age of Empires 5. I think anyone you ask on this forum would agree, who wouldn’t want a new title?

btw based on what the devs ever disclosed they already had a working version 7 years ago, when the game was first announced.

7 still isn’t 10. Nor will the game 7 years ago at all have represented what we got on release. “working” is far, far from complete (for any definition of complete on release).

What year do people think we’ll see AoE V? I thought we’d get at least 3 more years out of AoE IV.

Depends entirely on the dev cycle. They’ll also have to find a new primary developer and possibly game engine.

Based on Microsoft’s / management’s actions, I’m not even sure the franchise is being invested in to the extent that V is guaranteed at this point.

(which isn’t what I want, but it seems like resources are stretched across existing products, and stretched thinly at that)

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but on the AoE2 and AoE3 reddits, former Ensemble developer Patry made some shocking revelations about the franchise’s development.

https://www.reddit.com/r/aoe3/comments/1kztl5w/summary_of_sandy_petersons_ama_in_aoezone/

Here’s the most disturbing one:

He basically said they were actually “planning to abandon” the previous games when AoE3 came out, that they hoped people would migrate to AoE3, and that they planned to do the same for AoE4’s “TANKS.”

Let’s face it, since video games were a novelty in 1991, and in fact, they only became more complex around 2000, I understand why they companies understand enough about running a game franchise and that’s why they made the mistake of abandoning previous games. However:

The AoE franchise is NOT THE SAME as other franchises:

  • When FIFA releases a new game, it’s an “improved version” of the previous game, or updated with new mechanics, but it’s still “football.”

  • When Final Fantasy releases a game, it’s a “New Single Player Adventure,” but it retains many of the elements, such as combat modes, enemies, and mechanics, that the original series had and that made it successful. Maximum playtime: 20 hours/60-70 hours.

  • But when AoE releases new games: They’re not the same as their predecessors; they’re set in a different era or context, have new civilizations, a new unit roster, new mechanics between each civ, and a different time period. On top of that, they come with multiplayer and a scenario editor, so they’re games for 100+ hours / 200+ hours / 1000+ hours.

Therefore, people aren’t going to jump from one game to another because the time period changes, unless they like the time period. Even if they play the new game, they won’t abandon the old one if they liked it.

In fact, a lot of people jumped from AoE 2 to AoE 4 because it’s the same time period, but “with better detail, in 3D, and more historical representation thanks to the fact that we’re in 2021 and there’s the internet and international or national historians you can visit for consultations.”

Fortunately, Microsoft is managing AoE2, AoE4, and AoM: Retold simultaneously, so I don’t think there will be any problems with AoE5.

28 oktober 2021… that’s 3 and a half year. what are you talking about with 10 years???

I feel the need to correct the OP. It hasn’t been 7 years, it’s been 15 and counting.

Age of Empires 4: Definitive Edition should be right around the corner.
