counterpoint : Ashi, Early Carolean, Early Gascenya, 1st rework Bolas, Desert warrior outlaw, Soldado before they had to nerf it, Sepoy , TAD Jan
Iām pretty confident that āOPā just evolved to mean āstrong enough to be relevantā at some point from ātoo strong in all thingsā.
There is no question jans are stronger than sepoy or redcoats. Jan costs only 92 resources after age 4 card. So if you think about late game or treaty thatās a big deal.
Compared to the most basic musk, the janissary at its peak has 3 less ranged damage and vs cav does 3 less damage. Compared to sepoy/redcoat it has abt 15% less range damage and between 25-29% less melee cav damage.
Thats the cost of the extra +18-21% more hp - said hp lets it beat redcoats/sepoy head on but still means nothing against its counters; falcs still 2 shot them, skirms still arenāt even a fight and this trade actually makes it worse vs melee inf and cav at range.
The cost of 92 is against a 100 res redcoat and a 108 res sepoy (new Indian Gunpowder card). In other words - 8 - 15% cost compared redcoat/sepoy, respectively.
Net sum, you have a unit that can hold back things like doppels and halbs better at the cost of not being able to just shoot them down as easy - then its more replicable and needs more replacing with all the melee combat it need to do. Itās comparable to top tier musk, but not universally better.
The most cost effective musk in late game is still probably the swedish carolean because of the sheer amounts of upgrades they have, especially the higher range, speed and ranged resistance are maybe underrated in late game.
