Join me in not buying this new DLC

‘Can’t you just not buy on your own, tell us and the devs here that you’re not going to buy, and see if people agree with you on their own?’
That’s literally what I did in this post.
‘It’s posts like yours that make me want to buy it at launch or pre-order it, when I was probably going to wait for a sale.’
That’s a really weird attitude to have.

If that’s what you did, then you might consider changing your thread title to read this, to better capture what you aimed to do:

“I won’t be buying the new DLC”

or

“I won’t be buying the new DLC. Will you?”

The final paragraph in your OP seems to encapsulate what you say you did (what your aim was), and doesn’t indicate you trying to be the leader of some big protest

Hehe, admittedly, you’re probably right that it’s a weird attitude to have  I don’t mean to, but the thread title rally cry seems like a little much and my reaction, for whatever reason, is to want to counter that in a positive way. Don’t worry, I had the same reaction with I think it was V&V to counter all the negativity and change_dot_org stuff. I’ll try to take a deep breath next time and move on to the next thread. Sorry!

So… are you tone policing, or something?

Literally no one wants that. The AOE3 peeps want their promised DLC and for patches to resume. AOE2 peeps want this DLC fixed so it actually fits the game and treats the Jurchens and Khitans properly. You’re putting words in peoples mouths. The only comments from people saying they want development of the franchise to stop are those saying having no development is better than bad development. They don’t wannt efforts to stop, they want bad efforts to stop and all we are seeing recently is bad.

We want to be respected as customers and fans; as gamers. And the studio clearly doesn’t respect any of us. So we are going to respond in the only way that they’ll listen to us; sales. Don’t by bad product from a bad seller.

With the disconnect, what should they do in the future to avoid making ‘bad’ (subjective) content and showing respect? Pre-release alphas and/or betas? Focus groups? Polls? All the above? Do they still do PUPs? Or did they stop doing those. Seems like that’d be a time where they would hear an upheaval of discontent. Genuinely curious on solution ideas so they can help avoid in future

I always love it when devs communicate more on things they are working on and plan to work on

The difference between a bad and good DLC is basically, if it’s something the community asked for. Most of these experiments are things nobody’s asking for online, but rather random ideas World’s Edge thought would be good or exciting or something. So… Listening to the community + less experiments or just stop them altogether, is the most obvious way to make “good” content again.

Im buying the DLC, no doubts about it.

personally i couldn’t care less about the three kingdoms choice, im not mad. The devs gave us 5 NEW CIVS for the same price as other DLCs and im very happy about it. Apart from the heros in ranked i find the DLC amazing for what it is. Yes i would love if tibet was added but im not gonna go about complaining everywhere about it, we could get tibet in a later DLC.

The devs gave us something great, it may have its issues but overall in the bigger picture its great. Worth my money 0 doubt about it.

It is actually much worse than you say. The hero is just the tip of the iceberg. The entire mechanics of the three kingdoms (mainly) are strange, convoluted and far too different from the base game. There is an Italian saying: Errare è umano, ma perseverare è diabolico (from latin: Errare humanum est, perseverare autem diabolicum). Which you can translate into: To err is human, but to persevere (in error) is diabolical. Allow me to explain that.

Lords of the West (2021) introduced really strange mechanics that have not yet been fully assimilated. The Coustillier has been nerfed twice, Flemish Revolution is still there despite being hated by everyone in every way. The Sicilians have also had their share of problems. First Crusade made 10(!!) Serjeants appear for TC, and remember how instead of Hauberk there was Scutage.

Also in 2021 we had Dawn of the Dukes, a much better received DLC I would like to say. With much less strange things at the level of mechanics and I thought the devs had learnt to keep their creativity in check. Dynasties of India (2022) came out the following year. I don’t have to repeat again how well it was received as DLC, but we saw a little bad sign again with the strange mechanics of the Shrivamsha Rider. However, the situation is still under control.

Return of Rome comes out in 2023, and beyond the point of debate whether Romans yes/Romans no has the Centurion problem. After the Shrivamsha, another step in the wrong direction. The Mountain Royals also has a problem, which is the automatic HP recovery of the Georgians, another thing detested by everyone and which after 1.5 years is still there.

It seems obvious to me, that even before this Chinese DLC the devs refrain from retracing their steps, even when they have clearly made mistakes.

Now we come to the mechanics of this DLC, especially the Chinese kingdoms… Excuse me? WTF?
War Chariot with two fire mode? Lumberjacks that generate food? Military production buildings that provide Food? Infantry that regenerates HP? AGAIN?

This is too much. And I didn’t even make the complete list. It is not enough to remove the heroes, there is too much weird stuff all together.

It is not to err, it is diabolical.

Not to mention that that unit is clearly not made for multiplayer.

There is no difference in the model between modes. An opponent cannot at a glance tell what mode it is in.

Now, for single-player, this would be fine. You’re not under as much pressure, and a simple double-click tells you what’s what. But against another person this is asking for irritation. This is far more extreme than the Ratha problems people have had before, and the only reason this isn’t coming up is:

  • People more interested in talking about if these civs should even exist
  • Disinterest in the DLC and the game overall compared to the build-up to DoI thanks to these jarring civs

It’s ironic that, in the same patch that included dozens of reskins for visual clarity, we have a new unit that goes completely against that philosophy lol

Simple reason.

Because it was never supposed to be there.

Really absurd.

But absolutely. Solving the other problems we have been carrying for years would also be easy fixes:

  • Get rid of the Burgandians button once and for all. Modify the Flemish Militia as the Eagles/Fire Lancers. And maybe add the missing models (I think they look the same in all ages).
  • Shrivamsha Rider. If they want to keep the dodge (which is the shield mechanic in futuristic games) it must be largely contained. 2 attacks for the basic version, 3 for the elite version. Not 5 and 7 as now. Obviously increase stats. And why not, maybe +2 bonus attack against archers. The Savar have it!
  • The Centurion must lose the aura of effect, he can increase HP if he kills an enemy unit. Why not.

It will be really interesting to see the launch

And or AoE IV Variant Civilizations
The idea is already there!

Was going to buy the new DLC. But the last updates have been absolute garbage, so yeah I am in. They ruined black forest, broke attack animations, list would be miles long at this point, bottom line, yeah I am in.

If it brings a huge amount of new players to the game, that’s is BY DEFINITION good for the game. Might wait for the first discount on this one (which I never did before), but that argument still is bad.

Even if Western players don’t buy it, the Chinese will, turning it into a huge success.

This mythical ‘‘large chinese audience’’ never materializes for DLCs of existing games. Even if its a smash hit among the chinese playerbase, it will still underpeform because the suits would have wanted more.

maybe Japanese virtual streamers who were famous for watching the Romance of the Three Kingdoms TV series would buy it

Thanks to threads like these on this forum and reddit, i hope people buy/pre-order this dlc more, because this is literally best thing this game has gotten during past years. Only if they fixed normal things what most of people have waited from launch then this game would thrive!
