After roughly ten months of work, I’m very pleased to announce the release of the first ever Rome at War campaign. Julius Caesar, a Rome at War campaign is now live and can be downloaded through the Age of Empires mod manager, from Mods Single - Age of Empires.

Born into the Roman nobility, Julius Caesar rose to power as a young man. Discontent merely as the Governor of Hispania, Caesar’s ambitions would lead him to clash with the powers of Gaul, Germania, and Britain, expanding the rule of the Roman Republic as he went. The glory he won was eyed with envy by his Roman rivals, and the resulting Civil War would eventually bring Rome to the brink of collapse. Can Julius Caesar conquer his way across the ancient Mediterranean to emerge as Dictator for Life; or will his goals be shattered by countless enemies? In this campaign, you will play as the Roman Republic.

Play as Julius Caesar across seven levels, featuring some of the most famous battles of the late Roman Republic, from Alesia to Pharsalus, to Alexandria, with unique mechanics never before seen in Age of Empires. This campaign is fully voiced, extensively bug tested and suitable for all skill levels. Using the Rome at War mod for Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition, the antiquity era is brought to life, allowing you to experience the peak and fall of the Roman Republic unlike ever before.

This campaign uses the Rome at War mod, which must be installed first. You must download “Rome at War Datamod (Official Version)”, “Rome at War Graphics Part 1 (Official Datamod also required)”, and "Rome at War Graphics Part 2 (Official Datamod also required)"from the mod manager. If you use enhanced graphics to play, you must install “Rome at War Enhanced Graphics” parts 1-5 to play. Restart after downloading the Rome at War mod and this campaign.

Ensure that you restart the game before playing this campaign so that the custom sounds take effect. You must select “Rome at War Datamod (Official Version)” from the campaign screen before playing each level, or the game will not load the mod properly.

I got to play an early version of the Invasion of Britannia mission. It’s extremely well done. It’s like a fixed force mission, but with a really cool reinforcement mechanic that keeps the pacing really tight. I also like the free form nature of objectives as you can try multiple paths to victory. You also get to micro with the unique RAW naval units which makes water combat feel very satisfying. Excited to see the rest of the campaign and the other cool mechanics and maps.
