Just Poland mod design update

Hello there.

It’s been a while since I published a Polish civilisation test with my “Just Poland - Simple Polish Civilization” mod.

It was a simple mod just to learn modding and use the new 3D model of the winged hussar introduced in Knights of the Mediterranean.

I also really enjoyed the announcement of the Poland-Denmark DLC. I was ready to withdraw my mod when the DLC came out to avoid competing with the developers. But then the terrible thing happened. The DLC was cancelled…

So that motivated me to do an update. “Fine, I’ll dot it myself”. Well, not on my own, a friend helped me. It’s always more efficient to work together. Thanks Gromdal!

A little clarification about the civ design: I didn’t want to compete too much with Ropi336 and his Eastern Europe Civilizations mod, which already includes the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwelth civilisation, so I focused on a design centred on Poland alone rather than Lithuania. This is quite difficult because these two nations were closely linked for several centuries, but the civilization-nation concept in Age of Empires 3 is understandable. Yes, I play with compromise…

So after going through a lot of wikipedia pages, especially the polish ones (thanks to dictionaries and automatic translators), I changed the design of the civilization a bit and added a few things. Let me show you what I’ve done.

Overview of the polish civilisation

New skin for the explorer

It’s a 3D model of a Russian explorer but with a winged hussar helmet.
Wojtek’s design has also changed: instead of being a simple, very strong bear available at Age 4, Wojtek can be sent from the home city at Age 1 to help the explorer hunt for treasure, and Wojtek automatically upgrades at subsequent ages.

Barracks

Can train, from left to right:
-Piechurs: A mix of a Strelet and a Hajduk, its name simply means “foot soldier” in Polish.
-Sythemen: A pikeman who deals zone damage.
-Dziesietniks: The equivalent of a Russian Poruchik with slightly more hitpoints but less attack. Its name means “Decurion” in Polish and it has the same role as poruchiks, who were non-commissioned officers in the army.

Veteran and guard versions:

Royal stable

It may look like a simple Stable, but it has a big button that lets you unlock units and technologies from the royal houses of Vasa and Jagiellon. The stable also supports 5 population.

You can train at the stable:
-Uhlans: A more affordable Uhlan than its German equivalent. Speak Polish and are called Czapka Uhlans in guard (as they were then).
-Companions: a heavy dragoon that cost 3 population.
-Winged Hussars: the same as those of the Royal House of Vasa
-Lipka Tatars: the same as those of the Royal House of Jagiellon

Focus on companions

Czapka Uhlans and Guard Companions

Improved church

The church card has been slightly revised. The free technology is Djem. Only available in Age 4. This is exactly the same technology as can be found on the historical map The Deluge.

Then there are two shipements of musketeers, called the Foot Guards, which automatically improve with age. The last shipement unlocks them at barracks and forts.

Border defenses

Border defenses has been slightly revised at outposts and forts. They arrive more quickly but can only be sent once. However, there is a card of the home city that allows them to be sent back a second time (outposts only).

Folwark

The folwark is both a mill and a Livestock Pen and 15 villagers can work on it. There are several cards that can improve certain folwark concepts.

Artillery foundry and docks

Nothing new in these two buildings. The Polish grenadier is only available after sending the grenade launcher card. Ships have some historical Polish ship names, but there aren’t many, as Poland was never a great maritime power.

Revolutions

The Poles have access to the Romanian and Hungarian revolutions. So you can have even more fun with the outposts. Especially if you’ve sent a few cards of the home city before, including tabors and battery towers.

Home city

Warsaw looks similar to Berlin. I just removed the “Kurttz Metal Werks” and replaced it with a standard Manufacturing Plant.

Some notable cards:

Smoke and Lans Levy

Sends 1 Piechur for each existing house and 5 Scythemen for each existing folwark and plantation. Up to a maximum of 15 of each. All Infantry train faster.

Kosciuszko Uprising

All your Villagers turn into Scythemen. Removes the wood cost of Scythemen in exchange for an additional food cost. Improves Scythemen train time.

Registered Cossacks

Delivers 9 Cossack Daredevils. Enable Cossack Daredevils hiring at Taverns, Outposts and Royal Stables. Cossack Daredevils cost less population.

Permanent Defense

Outposts have more hitpoints, and you can call out Eastern and Southern Border Defense Units a second time.

Magyar Infantry

Ships 5 Hajduks and 5 Pandours. Counter skimishers, especially Piechurs, do more damage and have more range and line-of-sight.

Foreign delegation

You get a Shipment of Native Warriors from each different allied tribe. Native warriors are less expensive.

Mass mobilization

Improves cavalry train time and slightly improves infantry train time.

Tabors

Wagons are more resistant and move faster. Ships 1 military wagon and 2 war wagons. Allows you to train war wagons at the royal stable.

3 Battery Towers

Ships 3 Battery Tower Wagons.

Ranching

Just the usual ranching card. Hmm, wait a minute…

Tithe Barns

Folwarks, cows and sheeps trickle a small amount of Gold.

Hussar Banner

Ships a Winged Hussar and his retinue. Ships different units each time in the following order: • 1 Winged Hussar and 5 Lipka Tatars • 1 Winged Hussar and 6 Uhlans • 1 Winged Hussar and 4 Companions

Holy League relief force

You send a detachment of 3 winged hussars to help your besieged allies ! You personally receive an auxiliary force sent by the Holy League, consisting of 3 Winged Hussars, 3 Doppelsoldners of the Holy Roman Empire and 3 Pavisiers from the Republic of Venice.

Hetmans cards
There are three cards that send Hetmans. Similar to Japanese daimyo, they can train units and boost nearby units.

Stanislaw Zolkiewski

Jan Tarnowski

King John III Sobieski

Charge of the Uhlans

Ships a number of Uhlans and equips them with lances to inflict bonus damage to Infantry.

The title of this card was inspired by a music composed by Carl Bohm (1844-1920). A little jingle of this music is played when the card arrives.

I’ve also added new lines of dialogue for the units in this update, and I’ve also created a slightly basic artificial intelligence for the Poles that I’ll probably put in a separate mod to avoid conflicts with other mods that modify or add AI (AI modding isn’t additive).

The mod still needs a few additions and improvements, particularly in terms of 3D models for buildings or certain units (which I don’t know how to do at the moment, but it’ll come). But I’d like to get on with other projects, particularly my World War I mod, which has been waiting for a long time for an update.

I’d still like to thank Gromdal who helped me make the mod, especially for his art work on the unit and tech icons. I’d also like to thank Ropi336 who was the first to create a Polish and Lithuanian mod for the definitive edition and who inspired me. I would also like to thank the authors of the old Napoleonic Era mod on Age of Empires 3 The Asian Dynasty, who also added Poland civ and whose work I discovered very recently.

I’d also like to thank the developers for their work on Age of Empires 3 Definitive Edition. They’ve done an incredible job, especially the additive modding system which is incredible (the best modding system of all Age of Empires). Even if the publisher’s decisions are a real mess for our beloved game.

We plan to release the mod update in a week or two. There are still a few tests and fixes to be made.

Good’s mod,now official maybe can ploand-Lithuanian conversion to regular new dlc civ

Bonjour,

After a week, we kept adding things.

I’ve modified the Dziesietnik skin to make it different from the Russian Poruchik.

The same for Uhlans (standard and veteran versions). Which has been renamed ‘Nadwornych Uhlan’ (Uhlan of the court).

And with my mate, we’ve added two new units that are a bit special. Inspired by the Napoleonic Era mod from the legacy game.

The Lisowczyks. A raiding cavalry archer with an aura of fear. Obtainable with church technology or from the home city.

And the tabors. A war wagon that can carry infantry and take up a defensive posture that protects and boost nearby units.

Tabor in a defensive posture. You can see that the horse is detached in this posture and that its speed is reduced.

Tabor carrying infantry (up to 15 units)

La mise à jour sortira milieu de cette semaine si tout va bien !
If all goes well, the update will be released in the middle of the week!

Très hâte, le projet est super, manque plus que qqn s’occupe de faire le mod Danemark xD

Given the quality of this mod, do you plan on working on the Danes in the future?

No. I’d like to take a break after updating the Polish mod. And then I’ll go back to my WWI mod.

I’ll leave the modding of a Danish-Norwegian civilisation to other modders. But it’s not impossible that I’ll slightly modify my Polish mod to make it compatible with a mod like this (although I’m already working on making it as compatible as possible with other mods).
