Keep it name the Vikings, for marketing / promotional

Seriously dont listen to a few minority here, calling it The Vikings would net more sales than let say the other individual wanting to name it the “Scandinavians”, this naming just sucks

TV Show they called it VIkings, not Danes or Norse or whatever, guess why. cuz we known them as Vikings, the vikings were invaders and is what we called them. When the Vikings invade, we English calls them Vikings for a reason.

All my friends recognize the word Vikings here in the UK, yet if you talk about Danish or Scandinavians they wont know what that is, its the same with Rus, Rus you would know its Russian but if its Slav it made things Difficult

Guess the TV show didnt renamed themselves to Norse or whatever but keep the word Vikings? Cuz it had a bigger impact and audience will like it more, in English classes we were taught about Vikings, they werent ever mentioned as the norse or scandinavians, hence theres even the Age of Vikings

If you called it Danes or whatever its ruined cuz many ppl dont even know what danes is, they all know how recognize the word vikings, but not danes, danes is literally exclusive to Danish, which means Norway, Greenland, Sweden etc would be locked out, if it contains Civ mechanic from it

Dont forget Vikings includes people from Sweden, Norway and Denmark, its not just Denmark, and I guaranteed you if you keep the word “The Vikings”, it will net much more sales than let say “The Scandinavians”, it was called that way in AOE2, i dont see the need to change it

Exactly, anyway for marketing and if they want more sales they should keep it as vikings, its no brainer

Land of the vikings, do you see them call it Land of Scandinavians?

same with the other game

answer is no

There isnt a single game named scandinavian, thats a modern word

while theres plenty for vikings

anyway for Devs, if you want more sales, keep it named Vikings, it had a bigger impact, draws more audience then let say the Scandinavian/ Danes

The target audience for the DLC isn’t “you and a few mates”. The developers have been advertising historical authenticity, not pop culture references.

It doesn’t really affect me either way to be honest, but I’ve got nothing against it being made to be more historically-accurate. Doesn’t really matter what me or my friends learned at school, or what Netflix shows we’ve watched. I’m from the UK too!

Thats the thing, globally everyone know them as the Vikings, not the DANES or Scandinavians, and i just told you, this is how they taught us in School. and thats what everyone else learn too

it seems you have a problem with reading, maybe go learn some English classes because you dont sound like a brit

Historical authenticity, tell me why OOTD units are Giants then, why we have Jeanne as a Hero Unit, why is Zhu Xi named Legacy when it isnt like that in History, that had nothing to do with History its a Ridiculous Name. Only Ayyubid was real, the other variants is just BS

Tuglug Dynasty? that shit lasted less than hundred years lmao

Tell me why the Vikings TV Show isnt named what you wanted then, tell me why they went with the Vikings instead

and i dont see why the Devs need to listen to you when AOE2 is literally named the Vikings

they keep it that way and is good

Now you explain to me why they named it Vikings in the TV shows , as well as why the games are named Vikings, Not Norse / Danes or whatever please

There’s actually several museums near me that document them as Nordic people, and while they celebrate their history, the viking era is seen as regrettable for the murder and pillaging.

In a way, the game loses context on the realities of genocide and colonization that make up the middle ages.

It’s cute for boys to play, but a bit frightful when you realize the parallels of people craving the most violent representation possible.

I liked it better when we were swapping memes :frowning:

Have you stopped to consider that this might not always be the case?

The devs recognise the issues with older content, but aren’t going to be removing it. Like I said, they’ve upped the historical representation with more recent DLC.

Arguing over the name is so stupid. Just name them Vikings and be done with it. As you said, we have Zhu Xi’s Legacy in the game, with Shaolin Monks that fight armored units with a stick while wearing robes. Are we really gonna get stuck on the name “Vikings” as being ahistorical? This is ridiculous.

Nobody’s stuck on anything. It’s feedback for the devs. They can action it, or they can pass on it.

Everything else is preference. “just give them (or keep them as) the name I prefer” is going to be the stance everyone has!

Why have we got petty threads/ney, marketing advice for professional game publishers on the subject of civ names now?

The community are allowed to voice opinions on civ name choices, unless you’re in the niche profession of the Viking marketing board and we’ve touched a nerve? :joy:

I’m sure Vikings was the most requested civ, not Danes. No one wanted Danes, except maybe Danish people. So if the community is allowed to voice opinions, this thread is a valid one and one doesn’t have to be an expert. Feel free to label the ones you disagree with as “petty” if that makes you feel better.

Yes, it definitely is.

Not at all - I’m not going to lose sleep over civ names. I’m saying creating a thread specifically to ‘keep XXX, for marketing / promo’ is petty, not the opinions for/against.

I don’t find arguments petty.

Also if you are truly from the UK, you need to VISIT THIS PLACE

see? They called it the VIKINGS CENTER, not norse or scandevidians center

https://www.jorvikvikingcentre.co.uk/

Everyone here calls them Vikings in the UK, we dont call them Norse/ Danes, and we are the one who got invaded the most and integrated with them

Bro, did you even read the about page from the theme park you linked?

The Norsemen

The period referred to as the Viking-age dates from around AD 800 to 1050. The homelands of the Vikings were in Scandinavia, but the countries of Scandinavia as we know them today did not exist until the end of the Viking-age. Wherever they lived, the Viking-age Scandinavians shared common features such as house forms, jewellery, tools and other everyday equipment. These objects and structures are sufficiently uniform to warrant labelling the period by a single name – the Age of the Vikings.

They are very explicitly making the theme park about the interactions with Vikings, but are also acknowledging their history and identity as Scandinavians.

Viking defines a job and subset of a population, the civilization is defined first by their origin, not their jobs. You’re going to run headfirst into this wall every time, it’s an inescapable truth about Viking identity.
