Koreans civ concept (Second version)

I just wanted to post a second revision of this civ concept to make some punctuational corrections and as well as certain changes to the concept.

The Koreans represent the medieval period of Korea. In particular, it represents the kingdoms of the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties. The Koreans were historically known for defending themselves against invasions and were useful in naval battles.

Some proposed flags

  • Year span: 912 - 1598
  • Focus: Navy, Defense, Research
  • Difficulty: 1/3

Bonuses:

  • Archers receive +1 melee armor with each age up
  • Docks and Outposts receive +2 Line of Sight
  • Universities are 20% cheaper

Influence: Ondol

What does the Ondol do: Buildings within the range of Stone Pagodas can each generate trickles of food and stone if a technology is researching. If Seowon Learning is researched, defensive and research structures within the influence are able to autorepair while a technology is researched in addition to generating food and stone and the autorepair rate can increase if more technologies than one is researching at the same time (up to maximum of 10 doing the autorepair).

Unique Units:

  • Pengbaesu - Heavy infantry that can build a shield wall to deter attacks coming from cavalry units. Replaces the Man-At-Arms.

  • Hwacha - Siege unit that’s very similar to the Nest of Bees. Compared to that unit, it has longer range and does more shots, which contributes to wider area of effect but has a longer rate of fire and less attack points. Replaces the Mangonel.

  • Turtle Ship - Warship that is armed and is durable against damage, has less rate of fire, and costs less food but has less speed, less bonus damage against buildings (though not as low as that of the Atakebune), lower HP, and costs more gold. Replaces the Baochuan.

Unique Buildings:

Unique Technologies:

  • Dangpa Trident - Spearmen wield the Dangpa Tident, which causes attacks from the Spearmen to reduce the attack speed of enemy units by 15%. Available at the Barracks starting in the Feudal Age.
  • Reflex Bows - Archers receive +1 range. Available at the Archery Range starting in the Feudal Age.
  • Eupseong Strongholds - Outposts, Stone Wall Towers, and Keeps receive +2 range. Available at the Keep starting in the Castle Age.
  • Chongtong - Gunpowder units receive +1 range. Available at the Blacksmith starting in the Imperial Age.
  • Iron Flails - Lancers carry iron flails, which gives slightly more melee attack range and as well as bonus damage against armor. Available at the Stable starting in the Imperial Age.
  • Daejanggunjeon - Bombards have the ability to use the daejanggunjeon for only once. Available at the Siege Workshop starting in the Imperial Age.
  • Naval Shinkichon - Turtle Ships receive an additional Hwacha attack. Available at the Dock starting in the Imperial Age.
  • Bureaucracy - The cost of Town Centers is reduced by 25%. Available at the University.
  • Seowon Learning - The rate of resources generated by the Influence is increased by 25% and it also let’s defensive and research structures within the Influence slowly autorepair while a technology is being researched with the regeneration speed increasing with more technologies being researched at the same time (maximum 10 technologies doing the autorepair). Available at the University.

Landmarks:

  • Bulguksa Temple - Landmark that acts as a Monastery. Relics garrisoned inside can each generate 200 gold every two minutes. Based on the building of the same name.
  • Jungang Pagoda - Landmark that acts as a Stone Pagoda. Provides 3x more Influence range and can provide 20 population. Based on the building of the same name.
  • Dongae Fortress - Landmark that acts as a Keep. The ability for Gates and Walls to be built at half the speed of construction when within the Influence range is enabled. Based on the Dongaeeupseong.
  • Exalted Gate - Landmark that acts as a Siege Workshop. Siege units there have their cost discounted and 2 units can be created at the same time. Based on the Namdaemun.
  • Hall of Worthies - Landmark that acts as a University. Technologies at this Landmark can be researched 100% faster. Based on the building of the same name.
  • Gyeongbokgung Palace - Landmark that acts as a Keep with an innate Hwacha emplacement. Based on the building of the same name.

Wonder: Hwangnyong Temple

The Korean Wonder in AoE2: DE

Architecture: While being very similar to that of the Chinese and Japanese, it would still look different considering that Korean architecture (which was influenced by Chinese architecture) would be used. Age I would be using the Late Silla style with Age II using the Goryeo style, Age III featuring both, Goryeo and Joseon styles, and Age IV using an all-Joseon style.

Language: Old Korean and would evolve into Middle Korean.

Because the Pengbaesu would be having the exact same stats as the Man-At-Arms aside from the unique ability it has, only those proposed stats for each of the other two unique units are shown:

[Hwacha]

  • Cost: 300 wood and 300 gold
  • Training time: Same as Mangonel
  • Hitpoints: Same as Mangonel
  • Ranged Resistance: 75%
  • Speed: 0.81
  • Line of Sight: 14.22
  • Attack: 4
  • Attack bonus: +2 vs Ships
  • Range: 8.5
  • Minimum range: Same as Mangonel
  • Area of Effect: 1.745
  • Rate of Fire: 7.5 seconds

[Turtle Ship]

  • Cost: 160 food, 200 wood, 240 gold
  • Training time: Same as Baochuan
  • Hitpoints: 600
  • Fire armor: 0
  • Ranged armor: 25
  • Speed: 1.05
  • Line of Sight: Same as Baochuan
  • Attack: Same as Baochuan
  • Attack bonus: +60 vs. buildings
  • Area of Effect: Same as Baochuan
  • Rate of Fire: 5.415

It’s a good concept…for more unique units and landmarks you have the Koreans from Wars of Liberty AoE 3 CC mod…

Features

  • Can garrison their military units inside most buildings, turning structures into defensive buildings
  • The Korean navy gets stronger the more military buildings the enemy has
  • Buildings slowly regenerate over time

Unique Units

Jeobju icon Jeobju: Korean Mounted Donghak Monk. Can boost his attack through the 7 saint spears ability. Can stun treasure guardians and collect treasures.
Byeolgigun icon Byeolgigun: Ranged gunpowder Heavy Infantry. Good against cavalry, particularly at range.
Myeong gung icon Myeong Gung: Archer. Good against heavy infantry and Ranged Cavalry.
Dangpa spearman icon Dangpa Spearman: Archaic Heavy Infantry. Good against cavalry and buildings.
Fire lance icon Fire Lance: Skirmisher infantry that fires rockets to defeat heavy infantry.
Gungdo cavalry icon Gungdo Cavalry: Light Cavalry armed with a bow. Good against cavalry and artillery.
Iron flail icon 64 Iron Flail: Heavy Cavalry. Good against infantry and artillery.
Chongtong icon Chongtong: Artillery unit. Good against artillery and buildings.
Hwacha icon Hwacha: Artillery unit. Good against infantry, has considerable range.
Fire cattle icon Fire Cattle: Suicide unit. Good against buildings.
Hyeopseon icon Hyeopson: Light Battleship.
Panokseon icon Panokseon: Heavy Battleship. Can train units.
Geobukseon icon Turtle Ship: Armored Battleship.

Unique Buildings

Wonders/Landmarks

Haeinsa temple icon Haeinsa Temple: Provides unique Korean improvements.
Pyonyang gate icon Pyongyang Gate: Summons the Righteous Army, a small band of warriors.
Hwaseong fortress icon Hwaseong Fortress: Defensive building that can also train and upgrade artillery.
Grand palace icon Grand Palace: Acts as a market and slowly spawns villagers over time.
Puyong hall icon Puyong Hall: Casts the Whirlpool ability, which destroys enemy and friendly ships.

Spearmen already have a Spearwall ability that stops cavalry charges (see this page) – this unit is a combination MAA and Spearman? Knights are a soft counter to MAAs, and having Spearwall would neutralize or reverse that counter, making Crossbowmen the only alternative.

Thanks. Now about the Koreans from the Wars of Liberty mod, many of the units and buildings you mentioned do appear in this concept (albeit some of them in the form of unique technologies).

Regarding the Wars of Liberty version: while I liked it, I’d also say you have to be careful with one or two of its unique units.

Take the archer, for instance—the “Myeong Gung” isn’t actually a historical unit; the name simply means “Famous Archer.” Many units in that game are unique only in name, design, and a few stat tweaks, but many of them lack actual unique abilities.

Archery
That said, for AoE4, the Koreans have always boasted superior foot archers compared to other Asian nations—better than the Chinese, the Japanese, and even the Mongols. So, could be good for them to have a unique technology or two (like Reflex Bows) to reflect that.

It’s easy to make a bunch of unique units but they need to be historical too. Completely with you on this though I am no history buff.

Yes, some unique units can be regional (like the Fire Lancer and the Nest of Bees) and others are simply weapon upgrades with unique technologies… with that you’d have between 5 and 10 unique units, and that would be enough…:man_shrugging:

Nah. Fire Lancer and Nest of Bees (especially) should stay unique to the Chinese and its variants. Meanwhile, the Horse Archer, War Elephant, and maybe the Camel Rider all deserve to be regional units because those were historically rather widespread among many civilizations.

As THE person who designed Wars of Liberty Korea.

Do not use it as inspiration. You might have noticed already but I had little knowledge of Korea back then and most of the unit roster is basically made up. (Also civ is meant for the early modern period) (also also the civ bonuses are broken.)

Yes, exactly…

Yes, anyway, it’s just conceptual… obviously they’d be better developed for AoE 3 and 4…
