Graphics 8/10
pricing 5/10 (Triple A games go for $60, people have to know nothing about the gaming industry to not expect this)
gameplay, can’t say, haven’t seen any. But people love to criticize something they know nothing about
Civilizations 9/10 (Would’ve preferred Aztecs, Incas, or Mayans at start but other than that, great)
greed 0/10
Also, AoE appeals to History buffs, not modern political commentators, so the comparison is basically like telling the community “this game is not for you”, which has worked wonders everywhere else!
I thought the advice would much better apply to the one who first derailed the topic, by defending or complaining, (perhaps your emotions clouded your judgment?). That person is not Heinrich, or You. This post was the first mention of Jeanne:
Back to talking about graphics and building details, I would much prefer if we have a taller building so that they have more volume (changing the X,Y axis probably affects the gameplay much more than the Z axis). The castles in AoE II looked so imposing and the villagers look as if they can actually walk around the house. The currently detailed but too small buildings can feel like they are made for hobbits at times.
yes. and they are still plain pictures. 2d, no movement. Sorry for assuming that it was a PR graphic though.
This looks perfect to be honest, the buildings are incredibly well done but I think they need to work on the units.
JonOli12 post about Jeanne was still about the graphics and art style of the game. Heinrich1996100 post was totally focused on the merits of ‘feminist jeanne’ and nothing about the graphics itself. He derailed the topic to defend the merit of ‘feminist’ adjective used.
The lack of proportion make the game look too cartoony. This is a problem to immersion and age of empires is a game that tries to make the player immersed on the era the game is about.
A description that fits better for AoE 2, not AoE 4
Actually, Graphics 11/10*
Actually, no. AoE2 would be 9s across the board (except for greed)
No, graphics could be MUCH MUCH MUCH better. But they are good for the artstyle, which I really like. Hence only the 8/10
If the final game looks like the XO19 trailer I’m more than satisfied with it. Buildings, map itself and units all look wonderfull and in harmony. Even buildings scale looks good (even a bit bigger would be good too).
Maybe a bit more of details in units could be nice without producing any harm to readbility.
indeed. That is my opinion aswell. Althiiough the units already did see some upgrades and I would play the game with units as they were shown, I would like them even more if the git a bit better
If I write a sentence about graphics, like this…
And then say, well at least thats much better than (add any totally nonrelated topic here). lets say the bet still not starting
Its NOT about the topic. Its actually about the other one.
I chose not to answer the thread regarding my or Jons actions anymore, we had an interesting thread of PMs about that. And it WAS off topic. But you had to again break it open
I was simply and quickly voicing my opinion that such a comparison makes no sense, as the marketing may very well choose such words without it being bad.
Anyways, as already stated, enough of that…
But the proportion was never realistic in age games. So it should have broken immersion there too. yet it didnt.
But it can be optimised a bit more. I am happy as long as archers on walls fit in the dorrs, which they nearly do now.
What I would like to know is why all the recent AOE games looks… “blurry”
I can only assume what you mean and thats probably because the age 4 Devs decided it should look like a painting, with washed out lines and mixing colors. But not 100% because that would clearly impact gameplay too much.
AoE Online was made to reach a wider audience I assume, therefore its a Browser App and to work there has less demanding graphics.
However I wouldnt say age 2 or 3 DE are “blurry”? Or, at least age 2 did have a HD patch you might have missed?
3DE is kind of blurry. It’s not an issue with the resolution but a problem with the fact that there’s a weird filter over everything.
Take this for example:
The walls in the foreground a fairly crisp but beyond that, things become blurry quite quickly. Especially that wooden tower on the left.
Ah yes, I see. that didnt cross my mind, as I dont see that as blurry per se, I was thinking more of a technical/resolution blurry when reading the word.
I guess they also went for the more painted/mysterious look in that case. Because with these filters on it looks more like a painting, or similar, at least to me in this case.
But in the end, that is a choice the devs made, and I can only assume they did so to keep in line with the “Colorful” depiction of medieval times.
AoE3 isn’t about medieval times
larger medieval times then. High medieval, past, whatever. Sorry for being unspecific there
