Just putting it out there but what about decreasing the mobility of siege? I remember in Rise of Nations (which din’t have overpowered siege mind you) Siege units took a long time to pack and unpack, you would litterally see the crew put the trebuchet up and then dissassemble it so a horse could pull it.
Maybe if unpacking and packing took significantly longer they would be less oppressive? You couldn’t run them along with your armies at least and maybe they take bonus damage if attacked while packing and unpacking adding greater risk to deploying near combat.
Nah because AOE2 doesn’t have it and it’s the most popular so it is not necessary, it might hinder the pros from recognizing units, it may make control sluggish, AOE4 doesn’t have it either but it has ~10000 online players so it doesn’t matter, if you cannot make such a mechanic 100% realistic you’d better not do it at all, AOE3 and Rise of Nations has it and they don’t have a lot of players, it might break balance, it might break optimization, it might cause many other unnamed problems that you don’t know but someone from software industry can ensure you it exists, this game is not a war simulator if you want 100% realism go play total war, it’s not a mandatory feature, I personally like siege without crews, I don’t really care…that idea is justifiably neglected and should never be brought up again.
…until the devs really added this mechanism, which will suddenly become the next very praised and innovative feature.
Yes, the current sieges have huge design flaw.
Relic thought medieval to renaissance era sieges were tanks. You know, they make coh WW2 game xD
That is the logic they kept in mind in AOEIV.
And now we have sieges without any crew, fans asked for this, but they never cared about this because Beastyqt said so.
I know you don’t play AOE3 but some artillery can pack/unpack very quickly. If one really wants to maintain the precisely exact same mobility in AOE4 (which itself is debatable), you can keep that unchanged even after adding crews and pack/unpack animations by making them fast. And that is tunable.
Yes, exactly. It’s tunable (as far as I’m aware, which is why I was asking).
If I’ve made a mistake and it isn’t, that’s on me. I’m posting from my phone a lot at the moment; I’m on the computer less. So I’m not opening the editor up every time to check.
If it’s tunable, it’s not that it can’t be done. Won’t isn’t can’t, and if the mod tools enable this tuning and it’s not something only the devs can do, then it’s something players here could experiment with.
I don’t understand the question.
Also, I’d really love a pack/unpack animation with horses like falconets in aoe3.
It would make the game way more immersive and also make it more risky to spam siege and try hard kite with it.
In aoe3, once you make falcs, you have a vulnerable point, as they get slaughtered by melee units and culverines, if you do one mistake or they get snared.
The packing/unpacking takes a small moment only, but once the enemy is charging into your army, you can’t often times run anymore and you miss the window in which you could have shot the backline.
→ you dead
In aoe3, all units have clear strengths and weaknesses.
In aoe4 siege units barely have weaknesses and can just kite until infinity AND get repaired at the same time.
In aoe3, you can not repair siege, which was an amazing design choice.
Especially in the defense, siege should not be able to be repaired until infinity, while your keeps are massacring any unit that tries to destroy the siege…
Just faildesigned mechanic.
Why are you attacking siege protected by a Keep’s defenses?
I think that siege in this game could benefit from some work, just like naval did (and they could go further with naval, too).
But your argument was “it’s not doable in AoE IV”. My argument is that it is, and that it might even be doable with the mod tools we currently have (possibly not though, if there isn’t a mod for it already).
Also, AoE III is a different game, and copypasting mechanics between games rarely works out. This is different from something like “more Gaia variety” or “unique wall / gate models for all factions” (both aesthetic suggestions that players have made, just a couple of examples that were in my head).
Come on, what kind of question is that…
Because often times you have to, as you are running on a timer when English goes 1tc FC with white tower for example and got their first Mangos/Springs out.
Because the meta is such nonsense that you have to do it or lose on a timer.
It is often times your only desperate chance to still win the game.
Also when HRE got FC with Regnitz and try and get a FI with villager printer.
What is not doable in aoe4?
As we see in aoe4, where the unit types and many mechanics from aoe2 got copypasted.
And the result is absolutely terrible.
AOE4 also has siege packing/unpacking modes and mode switch animations. The only difference is siege move on their own and the animations are done by golden ghosts. This is actually aesthetic instead of a game mechanic.
If AOE4 siege is pulled by horses or pushed by crew, and the animation is done by crew, it could still work the same way as it is now. If ones wants to increase or decrease the mobility just change the animation speed (the golden ghost animation speed is already ridiculously fast). That’s what I mean by tunable.
