Mangudais in Patch 15.3.8338

Mangudais got a huge nerf in Patch 15.3.8338. In fact, the devs could have just removed Mangudais altogether instead of making this change. What were they thinking? This unit is now absolutely useless. The Mongols have been weakened massively with this change.

What’s the identity of the Mongols now? A cav civ with terrible cav units?! With barely any static defense this is just terrible. Mongols need to be reworked now.

They nerfed the strongest unit in the game, in the late game.
I was playing team games with players better than me and I would just build Mangudai and win, without micro, just running from one side to the other.
Of all the nerfs I’ve seen in AoE4, this is the most deserved. This unit was broken in team games.

Na, don’t worry… they nerfed many UUs, not just the Mangudai and they buffed the Keshik instead…

The pre-Imperial Mangudais were already trash, so what’s the point of nerfing it further? Mangudais are expensive, have short range, weak damage, and are fragile, are easily countered by archers, making them difficult to use without Khan’s Hunter. And now they’re taking away their only advantage. what are they thinking of nerfing it further?

As you can see, I’m an average/bad player, I only spawned Mangudai the entire game.
How could I have killed so many more than the others?
Mangudai were indeed too strong, but I wouldn’t mind if they increased their base damage, since the big problem was the damage they dealt while running.

Its justified mangudai is way too cheap to spam, hits way too hard and runs away nonstop

Im happy they killed it, next they need to nerf Dark Age Spear Rush from Mongols, strongest dark age in game and 0 skill

Mangudai aren’t dead especially on maps like PRAIRIE??? Mongols with an in base 8k gold and 2.4k in base stone they can easily fast IMP and devastate civs that need to get out on the map to thrive.

Also since they did not get a movement speed need it means you still can’t run them down especially with units slower than 1.875 speed cav.

Mangudai are fine. It should be a raiding unit not kill everything instantly

They continue to fulfill their original purpose:

  • Raiding villagers and harassing enemy units from a distance, especially melee infantry.

The real problem before the Patch was that a unit supposedly created for micro-raiding and effective raiding as long as it isn’t captured, was practically invincible in the Post-Imperial era, even against its only counter (the horseman), and fires as if it has infinite ammo, or those firing never tire.

At least now there’s the understanding that rapid fire “tires” mounted archers, and therefore they have to rest before returning to rapid fire and reloading their quivers.

Besides that, the addition of +20% Horseman production increased the use of Dark Age Rush by Mongols, or the Feudal Horseman Rush excessively, instead of the tower rush.

Mangudai has never been particularly strong before, especially during the feudal and castle ages. Despite being a unit that could be easily countered, (by archers, sieges, towers etc) it was nerfed due to excessive complaints from low-Elo players. In high-Elo, particularly in tournaments, mangudai has never been a preferred unit.

It is a real shame. This unit is not cool anymore, which is actually supposed to be the signature of Mongol. Is their way of balancing just to nerf all the cool stuff?

That’s right, trying to balance everything makes the game bland and boring…

Players were mostly hating on Mangudai because of the late-game death balls that were the terror of team games. But the current nerf hits feudal Mangudai even harder, making them all but useless in 1v1s. I wish the devs had chosen to nerf imperial age Mangudai instead, for instance by taking away incendiary arrows when moving. (That’s unrealistic anyway.)

Yes. I totally agree. Before the nerf, Mangudai can actually kite French knight in Feudal, which is game-changing. I think

  1. The Mangudai damage should be increased in Feudal and decreased in Imperial relative to the current state (this also reflect history where recursive bow is no longer so effective against plate amor and some better horse armor than chain mail and perhaps no horse armor in earlier days).
  2. In addition, for better tempo, I suggest maybe Deer Stone can be buffed to grant Khan’s hunter periodically during the whole game (or maybe just grant one for free after its completion).
  3. With the first change, I think maybe either increase their movement speed back to 1.62, or get their fire rate back to 0.88 during movement?
