Mercenary Companies for Aoe 4

Given that in age of empires 3 we could recruit different mercenaries at the tavern depending on the map, and Asian civs could recruit European troops from the consulate depending on the chosen alliance. I am hoping for a similar mechanic for Aoe 4. Out of the 2 I think a combination taking the best of both worlds is a good idea.

Choose a mercenary band from one of 3 options randomly chosen for the map. Each band offers 3 unique units recruitable at the trade post and one unique military tech. All units are recruited exclusively with gold though they are expensive.

You are limited to one mercenary camp in (where you recruit mercs) in age 2, 2 in age 3 and 4 in age 4. This should limit the number of mercs to a reasonable level so as to not replace conventional armies entirely.

White Company. Famous for their dismounted knights and longbows. Unique units Double Lancer Man-at-arms (a slow 2 pop unit composed of two men holding a lance with 2 reach good vs armour and cavalry), Squire (a medium cost mounted unit like a knight only very slightly less health armour and a speed somewhere between knights and horsemen), Company Longbowmen (the same as English longbowmen but with plus 1 range). Their unique tech: Italian Yew (increases the range of all archers (and longbowmen b) by +1.

Catalan Company. Primarily light infantry specialists known for mobility and aggressive close combat. Ascona Hunter (very fast almost knight speed spearmen that have a charged throwing spear attack like the donso but no melee armour or increased health), Azagaya skirmisher (an anti-cav javelin throwing infantry with decent armour penetration and decent melee damage but short range), Coltell Cleavers (cheap, fast raiding infantry that is more effective against villagers). Unique tech: Almogavar Dicipline (increases the speed of spearmen and javelins by +10%)

Company of St. George. Equipped with standard Italian weaponry of the late 1400’s. Barbiano Lancer (a knight that ignores half the braced spear effect when it charges with its lance), Condota Arbalelster (like crossbowmen but with a deploy pavise ability that renders them immobile but increases range by one and ranged armour by +4), Schiopettiere (an early hand cannoneer that has slightly less damage but is cheaper)

Swiss Company. Known for deadly long reaching pike wall and rapid advances to rush artillery. Swiss Pikemen (has 3 tiles reach bonus vs cavalry and absorbs some damage from nearby troops increasing survivability in numbers), Swiss Halberdier (has 2 tiles reach, high armour like a man at arms and a slight bonus vs cavalry), Lucerne Hammerer (deadly high damage but slow attack infantry that slows targets recently hit). Unique tech: Swiss charge (all infantry map-wide get +20% speed for 6 seconds every 45 seconds)

Landsknecht Company. Known for use of the use of the pike square and and deadly zweihanders to disrupt opposing pikes. German Pikemen (has 2 tiles reach bonus vs cavalry and absorbs damage from nearby troops increasing survivability in numbers), Company Landsknecht (same as regular Landsknecht but also decreases the damage of enemy infantry it hits by -1 damage), Dopplesoldner (a 2 pop Landsknecht like the gilded landsknecht though it disrupts enemy troops enemies it hits’ damage by -2 damage and stacks with Götz Schweiker effect). Unique tech: Gevierte Ordnung (unlocks a formation that increases the melee and range armour of pikemen and spearmen by +2 but slows them by 25%)

Yamada Nagamasa’s Japanese Mercenary Band. Ronin that served as shock troops to the Siamese king in the kingdom of Ayutthaya. Ronin Katana Samurai (like regular katana samurai but does area damage every 3rd attack), Ronin Naginata Samurai (a heavily armoured antilarge samurai), Matchlock Samarai (like hancannoneer but with heavy armour like a samurai) Unique tech: Shuinsen Logistics (men-at arms and similar units cost 10% less)

Mamluk Regiments. A caste of heavily armoured ‘slave soldier’ elites. Khassaki (a very high health, heavily armoured but low damage heavy cavalry like a knight but chonkier), Tabardariyya (heavy infantry equipped with an axe that do bonus damage vs armoured and inflict bleed), Furusiyyah (like the Rus horse archer but with a Parthian shot ability that enables them to fire whilst moving). Unique tech: Al-Nasir Breeding Lines (all cavalry is 5% faster and has +10% health).

If you have any other ideas for mercenary companies (especially non European ones), please post your ideas below and I will add them to my list.

They can also train mercenaries from the monastery…

The White Company used unbroken lances on foot. That’s why they needed 2 men per lance to weild them.

You are entirely right, my bad. Broken lances (or Lanze Spezzate), specifically refers to Italian mercenaries in the mid 1500’s that became detached from their original companies. I mistakenly gave them that name because they are Italian mercenaries though not quite the same time period.

Good point. I forgot they had a monastery because I never use it when I play the Asian civs.

Yes, it’s kind of anecdotal, but there it is…

I once had an idea for every civ to have mercenaries… but that stopped making sense once variants were introduced, and given that many historical mercenaries ended up becoming the “Unique Units” for those very civs—such as the Varangian Guard (Byzantines), Landsknecht (HRE), Black Rider (HRE), and Gallowglass (Scots).

The problem is that if the mercenary camps were available on every map—or became a standard feature—much of what makes each civilization unique would be lost; it would no longer be a battle between civilizations, but rather a contest to see who could grab the best mercenary on the map and mass-produce it.

On the other hand, I would prefer for this mercenary camp option to be available only on specific maps, with a limit on how many mercenaries can be created—similar to the Ronin (Japanese mercenary).

Maybe the Routiers, or the Brabançons, could fit.

I see all those ideas working better as mercenary options for an Italian civ, like Milan or Florence. They are too complex to be a feature shared by multiple civs.

Perhaps on a map representing an Italian biome, they could well include mercenary outposts featuring some unique units.

In that case, they would work well as a “Unique Unit” for the Ayutthaya civilization. Ronin already exist as a standard mercenary unit available from certain special sites.

I cannot find sources for the names you have written as unique units.

They can just limit you to a small number of buildings and make the units expensive. There are only so many you can recruit if they limit your production capacity.

Yeah, so maybe I should be brainstorming new civ concepts instead of mercenaries. You’re completely right this could be too complex for a free update. Maybe skip the techs and use completely in-game assets so they don’t have to recreate the wheel. Like perhaps the German mercenary company unlocks the black rider, landsknecht and early man-at arms as an example. Though that would sadden me a bit since I don’t think the Catalans or White Company will ever be in a dlc, but who knows.

If you search tabardariyya you should find results. The iyyah is used to represent the collective plural representing an entire military regiment.

Kassaki was what an elite bodyguard of the Mamluk sultans was called or kassakiyyah if there was a detachment of them. Since the Mamluks preferred mounted warfare I felt it was fitting their cavalry would be name this.

As for the syrafi, it’s just a bad name and I will change it to faris archer or furusiyyah as I think that name better fits a unit of horse archers.

Or maybe you could just limit the number of mercenary camps because troops take super long to recruit in aoe 4 anyway.

You have a point maybe the stock up system is over-complicated. New idea: you are limited to 1 mercenary camp age 2, 2 in age 3 and 3 in age 4.

I recall discussing that a few times in the past, but similarities to AOE-3 were likely viewed negatively, which might be why it wasn’t even considered. It’s a shame, because the concept of minor factions and mercenaries adds great flexibility and depth to the game; it allows for the inclusion of cultures that wouldn’t make sense as full-fledged civilizations, and it offers a lot of replayability.

But my enthusiasm for this game has already died, so I’m looking forward to this kind of thing in future titles.

Same tbh.

I abandoned this game a ways after launch because games started to feel ‘samey.’ Then Malians come out with a whole new take on the unit counter system so I play for a few months again. Now I am bored of Malians so I am waiting for an update to one day hopefully bring me back. It would need to be a completely new civ, not some variant and be really good. Either that or they add a mode where mercenaries are available or something.

Right now enjoying some good old aoe 3 with the Poles and Danish. Glad we are still getting some support.

Ps. To clarify: I have had loads of fun with Ootd, Zhu Xi’s Legacy and Japan too. Been still playing this game still just not constantly every other day like before.
