Archers as a Counter to Horse Archers (Idea)
While developing a Timurid concept, which I will publish soon, I discovered a possible solution.
Historically, there are two instances where a unit faced Mongol horse archers and won. In both cases, the “Foot Archers” were the best solution.
Battle of Parwan - 1221
After the Mongol invasion of Khorasan, the Khorezmite Empire was in ruins. During a raid against the last remaining troops of Sultan Jala-al Din, the Mongol and Persian troops clashed at Parwan.
Due to the rugged terrain and the mountainous flanks, the Mongols were unable to encircle the enemy. Jala-al Din ordered all his horse archers to dismount and attack on foot, using precision rather than speed. The tactic worked, and they managed to inflict so many casualties on the enemy horse archers that the enemy army had to flee.
Conclusion of the battle: To avoid a false retreat, Jala-al-Din ordered only a portion of his men to pursue them, and when the Mongols returned, Jala-al-Din led a full charge with all his troops to end the counterattack, winning the battle and capturing most of the Mongol army that failed to flee.
Battle of Terek River - 1395
Final battle between the Golden Horde of Toktamish and the Timurid Empire of Tamerlane. During the second day of the battle, a general on the left flank of the Timurid army came up with the idea that instead of fighting with horse archers on the plain, it would be better to await the enemy with foot archers surrounded by large shields (like pavés). This tactic worked, as the greater accuracy of foot archers caused more damage to horse archers than their continuous firing.
Conclusion of the battle: By the third day, Timur managed, at some point the day before, to contact Toktamish’s rival emirs to betray him, and this happened, weakening one of Toktamish’s flanks and allowing Timur to encircle his army, thus winning the battle.
