This is the only race this happens to me with, but playing as the Mongols the longer the game goes the more unplayable it becomes. This has been going on since two years ago, so I stopped completely playing the mongols, but it gets to the point where I am like 5 minutes behind all the action and my commands take minutes to execute so I become a spectator in the games.
I completely agree with your points—couldn’t have said it better myself. I’ve probably logged close to 1,000 hours playing Mongols over the years, and the issues you mentioned really resonate with my experience.
Beasty did a great job outlining the core problems and here’s couple extra, especially:
- Early game disadvantage: Losing a villager during the initial TC move puts Mongols on the back foot right from the start. (maybe adding 1 extra villager)
- Limited win conditions: You’re often forced into either a risky early tower rush or a super late-game trade boom, which relies on uncontested trade and spamming underwhelming gold units. (Rebalance gold units for late game, there is no balance between late game units such as Janissary, Streltsy, Knights, Tower elephants. Rock-paper-scissors doesn’t have viable POP/Benefit counters) Think about it, keshik has less or same HP as some civs MAA, how is this POP/Viability balanced?
- Uneven economic scaling: Mongol eco just doesn’t keep up. Even with 2TC, the returns are nowhere near what other civs get—especially with the increasingly powerful eco bonuses some civs (like Templars) are receiving. (Nerf eco from other civs or give mongols eco bonus)
- Stone upgrade dilemma: The current system forces you to choose between essential upgrades—eco tech, double production, or tech—when realistically, you need all three just to stay competitive. (buff stone upgrades, triple production? or quadruple production? through a landmark or tech?)
- Game-breaking bugs: Long-distance harvesting and Steppe Redoubt glitches (like villagers endlessly running back and forth) can completely stall your gold income and cost you the game. (fix the bugs, people are ending up building more Gers due to inability to move those!)
It’s frustrating to see such a unique civ struggle so much in the current meta. Hopefully, the devs take a closer look at these issues soon.
Hi Nuu,
My issue is only performance oriented when it comes to the game physically becoming unplayable. As for your other points they might be valid but I have not had a playable late game for me to know for sure. Usually my teammates have carried me when the game slowed to a slide show and it could take minutes for my commands to be followed.
Fair point. That said, there have also been several mentions—and I’ve personally experienced this too—of general sluggishness and occasional crashes. However, since I don’t play other civilizations that often, I haven’t been able to make any solid comparisons or draw broader conclusions.
I play with every civilization in the game, the only civilization that has the late game performance issue for me is the Mongols, so something is physically wrong with their coding. I have a high end 3 year old system so I know its not my hardware.
