Even through I’m enjoying the game as it is. I really hope that we either A: Get more Asian/African civilizations as DLC (e.g Koreans, Siamese, Aceh and Sulu kingdoms, Savafids, Adal sultanate, Zulu, Benin, and Moroccans). Or b: get at least a
rework for the current ones visually, unit and mechanics wise. That would be a dream of mine.
Majority of folks on here want to see some more non-Euro civs added into the mix.
The ‘loudest’ ones pushed, with good reason, often are Persia and Korea.
Personally I hope that the Polish & Danish DLC brings many more players and profitability to AOEIII (which judging by the last Euro DLC is will). That way there’s always a chance for more DLC.
In my opinion I feel the most sensible way for DLC is to either go two routes.
Persia & Korea DLC. Adding to the Asian Dynasty/Wonder-mechanic civ pool with the much requested civs (seen on here, social media, Discord). Caters to the masses and may even be an incentive for grizzled AOE2 players to see how ‘their’ Persia and Korean civs playout in a completely different era. This could also be a way to see more Asian minor civ and map variety.
A ‘Forgotten’ style DLC. Basically you have a ‘headline’ civ (Persia, Korea, Brazil, whatever - just you most requested!), alongside two others that will never get the limelight or may not be known as much via pop culture. For example an African civ like the Shona States or Malagasy with a Native civ such as the Haida.
For the record, I really love the African Royals DLC - the civs have real personality and are a refreshing change from Euros… but I don’t think it sold as well as the KotM Euro-focused civ. I think a Forgotten Civs type of DLC is the way we get more African civs. Lure the folks with the super popular, much-wished for civ shoehorn some more legit empire-building, but unknown (to the masses) civs!
Not part of the main routes, but I’d also love to see more singular DLC civs, ala Mexico and US. I think that’s probably the best way to bring in more Federal State-type civs (such as Brazil).
I’d also like to see the Moroccans, however I believe they would need to be mechanically inbetween the Africa Royal civs and Euros. I’d love to see some brainstorming threads on this as it was entertained by the Devs (there’s a really insightful post of the AR civs which touches on this).
+1 We already had DLC of American, European and African civilizations. I think it is the turn of Asian civilizations. Korea and Persia would contribute a very interesting roster of units, buildings and new mechanics to the game, greetings.
I’m starting to come round to the idea that MENA civs should be a middle-ground between AE and Euro civs in terms of mechanics.
I think Persia should just be part of the Asian Dynasties mechanics, 'cos aside from being Muslim, they are culturally different to North Africa and Arabia.
MENA civs could age up the same as Euros, get Arsenals, Stables, Barracks etc, but also get Palaces (Kasbahs in this case), Watchtower etc. Just no Cattle Markets and Factories!
In my opinion, Age Up for MENA civs should be unique. I like the idea from AoE 4, where Abbasid Dynasty adds wings to the House of Wisdom building as part of Age Up. I think this could work in AoE 3, where MENA civs would be focused on science and innovation.
Of course, this should be more interesting than it looks in AoE 4. There would be a pool of Science Fields from which the player would only choose one for Age Up purposes. The following Science Fields could be available:
Medicine - Mosque heals nearby units and increases the efficiency of healer units + Hero unit: Caliph (healer with the ability to train military units)
Alchemy - technologies related to artillery and firearms + ability to train strong artillery units
Botany - possibility of building various orchards (Food or Coin) and trees (Wood) + free delivery of food boxes every 10 minutes
Agronomy - the ability to build channels that increase the efficiency of economic buildings + economic technologies
Geography and cartography - increasing the speed of units and the ability to train unique naval units + instant map discovery
Physic - technologies related to military and acces to train “engineer” unit who can build defensive and Fort-like structures
That works for AoE4 which takes place during the Islamic golden age, but it would be pretty anachronistic for AoE3. In that time they started to decline due to getting stomped on by the Mongols and because Muslims actually became the majority and were oppressing everyone else more.
I think if MENA civs were ‘inbetween’ the AR and Euros, it might make a natural step between the two, as the AR civs are rather unique.
They could still have traits unique to them.
For example:
Instead of Trade posts and Taverns they get a building that covers all - the Funduq (Arabian term for a Caravanserai). This could be built on TP sockets as well as freely in the base.
Souks could be a replacement of Markets and Livestock Markets. They could benefit from multiple Souks being built close together by making market exchange costs more favourable and spawning resource crates or camel
Regarding Morrocans (and I guess applies to MENA in general):
I think it could still be a possibility if a decent structure could be found for Morrocans et al. This is why I’m pushing it’s gameplay to not necessarily be totally unique, but rather a happy medium between Euros/AR civs. Embrace the crossroads!
If they are going to want to make a DLC after Danes and Poles they should be civs with recognizable and attractive names, not civs that only few people know. Persia and Korea have interesting names, so they can attract attention and appeal because more potential Asian players will buy the game.
