My Future Expectations for Age of Empires IV

Hi everyone, thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts! As a huge fan who owns all the DLCs, I’ve really enjoyed the journey so far, even if the latest expansion was a bit polarizing. I love the new QoL updates and biomes, but I have a few specific dreams for the game’s future.

  • Immersive Day/Night Cycle: Inspired by the stunning atmosphere of the campaign missions, a dynamic day/night cycle would be incredible. Seeing torches on city walls automatically light up at dusk would add a magnificent layer of detail.

  • Dynamic Weather: Adding rain or snow (perhaps as a toggle-able option or map-specific feature to protect performance) would make the world feel much more alive.

  • UI Overhaul for Post-Game Stats: The current endgame screen is quite clunky due to the horizontal scrolling. A cleaner, more intuitive layout—similar to Age of Mythology: Retold—would be a huge improvement.

  • Advanced AI Commands: Reintroducing the ability to give specific orders to AI allies (like requesting resources or coordinating attacks), similar to the system in Age of Empires III, would greatly enhance the tactical depth and overall enjoyment.

Feel free to share what features you would like to see in the comments below. Happy gaming, everyone!

I actually agree with a lot of this. AoE4 already has such a strong atmosphere, especially in the campaigns, and I’d love to see more of that carried into the rest of the game.

A day/night cycle with torches lighting up on walls or buildings would be amazing visually, especially for single-player, custom games, and campaign missions. Same with dynamic weather. I understand why competitive players might not want anything that affects visibility or performance, but as a toggle or map/campaign feature, it would add so much immersion.

The post-game UI definitely needs love too. The current stats screen feels clunky, and AoM Retold’s layout is a good example of how much cleaner it could be. AoE4 has a lot of interesting data, but it should be easier to read and compare without fighting the interface.

I’d also really like better AI commands. For people who enjoy comp stomp, campaigns, skirmish, and co-op-style play, being able to coordinate with AI allies would make the game feel way more alive. Asking for resources, calling attacks, defending areas, or coordinating pushes would be a huge improvement.

My personal big wish would be more campaign and co-op content. The Yue Fei campaign reminded me how good AoE4 can be when it uses voices, characters, and historical context properly. I’d love to see future campaigns keep that style and maybe even bring more replayable single-player or co-op modes.

Basically, I’m all for features that make the game feel more immersive and alive, as long as competitive clarity/performance is protected with toggles where needed.

Yes, at least we know the engine can handle dynamic climate control; all that’s missing is the day/night cycle like the AoMEE had…
