My thoughts on the new god portraits

First of all, most are good so I only talk about those I don’t like.
I’m picking more on the overall styles than the quality or details.

1. Bast
This one has been discussed back and forth before. AI generated or cat species aside, the head feels uncanny.

2. Anubis
Anubis is the protector of the dead. The OG art chooses a slightly low-angle view. He looks down upon you standing still. That perspective gives the feeling of fear and awe.

The new one feels like…an RPG thief or a MOBA assassin hero?

Also I don’t like the underworld always portrayed as some foggy, gloomy, greyish Dracula castle. It’s different between cultures.

3. Hephaestus
The OG art has lightning and this unearthly reddish tone. It gives the impression of forging something beyond human.

The new one is just too generic.
Also the typical image of Hephaestus should be a bearded old man. The OG one does not have beard either but at least he looks old.

4. Kronos
…generic Marvel secondary villain?

5. Atlas
He’s annoyed?

Overall I think some of the gods, those that are dignified or feared should not have much expression, pose or interactions with the viewer. It should give you the vibe of standing in front of the great temples or statues from the ancient times. That’s what I find missing in some of these portraits I don’t like.

Some other gods are more “secular” and involve in daily business, so they don’t necessarily have to.
