NEW CIV CONCEPT: CATALANS

All feedback is welcome

LITTLE DISCLAIMER (you can skip it).

This is a civ based on the composite monarchy, which was established under the Crown of Aragon (a dynastic union between the Kingdom of Aragon and the Principality of Catalonia). I consider calling it “Catalaragoneses” (a historiographic name such as Byzantines) but finally I decided to go for Catalans since this civ is focused on the Crown’s expansion in the Mediterranean Sea in were the Principality held the main role, and the term people mostly used to refer to them was Catalans (if the civ focus was centred on its history on the Iberian Peninsula I would probably go for Aragoneses) w

Now, to the civ…

……….

CIV CONCEPT: CATALANS

Catalans are a Mediterranean civilization based on the Crown of Aragon, a composite monarchy born from the dynastic union of the Heiress of the Kingdom of Aragon and the County of Barcelona (or Catalan Principality). From then on, the House of Barcelona, though remaining counts of a sovereign territory, will gain the status of kings, thanks to also becoming kings of Aragon. Lately, these two territories will be joined by the Kingdom of Mallorca, Valencia, Sicily, and other lands alongside the Mediterranean Sea.

They are a naval and infantry civilization.

UNIQUE UNITS: ALMOGAVERS & CAVALLER DRAC

ALMOGAVERS

It’s a fast, light infantry unit with strong anti-cavalry properties and a quick melee attack. Its peculiarity is that while approaching to attack an enemy, it throws 2 darts/javelinas as a charge attack with a3-second cool down. On contact, it changes to sword-handed, close combat.

Almogavers are a bulkier, higher attacker, faster, and more versatile anti-cavalry unit than the halberdier, with a very high bonus, but they suppose a much higher cost in gold (trying to represent their role as fortune soldiers and the problem they tend to cause to their lord’s economies, so they must be used wisely). Their weak points are meant to be units that can kill them quicker than they can (hand cannoneer, jaguar warrior, and samurai), non-cavalry tank units (Teutonic knights), scorpions, battle elephants (due to raw power), and defensive structures.

NOTE (regarding this last, maybe they could have their own class, like condottiere, so Town Centers, Towers, and Castles could have some kind of bonus against them).

The correct civ name would be “Araganese”

Move all El Cid campaign missions to it. The OG Spaniards could get a campaign about Cortez so that Conquistadors make sense :stuck_out_tongue:

I always find it curious how these community-created mixes tend to sidestep the issue of dubbing. After all, Aragonese and Catalan are two distinct Romance languages.

I, too, would simply go with the Aragonese, and focus solely on the Kingdom of Aragon.

Why do you think that???

Wouldn’t that just be Spanish civ 2.0?

You must be a Catalan nationalist is you propose to use that word as a civ in the middle ages, Catalunya is only one of the regions of a larger entity called Aragon, which existed with that name for several centuries and includes all of the things you describe and more.

I also wouldn’t called the burgundians “belgians” for the same reason

This civ is not good.

Get rid of charge attacks, auras, weapon switching, and armor-ignoring mechanics. They all suck.

And come up with unique bonuses instead of damaging other civs’ uniqueness by taking their bonuses.

Aragon? No thanks don’t need any Lord of the Rings in my AOE2 3K was already enough fantasy for me

Look i deleted my harsh lesson snap at you i learned as a kid… but cmon dude…

But it seems that there is no very strict rule of naming the civs. Saracens, Byzantines or even Italians do not really fit.

I hope you’re not serious.

I think he’s making a lotr joke about Aragorn

I’m afraid you are confused.

What you are talking about it was not Aragon but the Crown of Aragon a way to refer the dynastic union between Aragon and Catalonia which itself is quite modern and doesn’t entirely fit the medieval period.

Most of the time people referenced to either Aragon or Catalonia depending on their situations. In the Mediterranean (which is the focus I have to this civ) the predominant name in the source materials was Catalans. ^^

What lesson would that be if I may ask?

I believe the getting other civilization bonus (like Roman’s or Urumqi swordsman’s getting a charge attacks like Coustilliers) was something that happened in aoe2 hahaha

Though I’m afraid the feedback “this civ sucks” doesn’t help to improve the civ. Have any particular orientation? I mean it I would really like to perfectionate this concept

This is the paladin?

A last moment idea to substitute the Paladin, yeah. Usually when I propose this civ I stop at the cavalier but someone suggested to add flavour and I liked the idea.

Not 100% sure with this one, tbh

Wont that be just a copy of the persian savar then?

Just keep the generic units as it is and keep uu only to castle like the other european civis.

Mmmh that could be something. Thx for the feedback
