It could be cool to have a roguelike game mode like how AoMR has AotG/gauntlet, but instead of getting blessings that you’ll probably not use after every fight you instead gradually build a civ over let’s say 40 fights, with every fight offering either a unit or unit upgrade reward, a generic upgrade reward, a civ or team bonus reward with offerings of Castle unique units or upgrades taking place at fixed points.
The way I see this starting would be selecting a scout unit of your choice and for the first several fights to have alternate win conditions so you don’t have to worry about killing a TC with only scout cav or whatever.
There could also be unusual bonuses and upgrades (ones that don’t belong to an actual civ) placed in here to spice things up a bit more.

Hmm that could be really cool.
What if after every mission you get to choose between 3 different random things from the same category to unlock.
You start with no civ bonus, no UU, no UT, no regional units and a techtree with a lot of technologies missing. So no Imperial Age Blacksmith upgrades no Imperial Age unit upgrades and no Gambesons, Squires, Bloodlines, Husbandry, Thumb Ring, Parthian Tactics, Siege Engineers and none of the University ship upgrades. Also you start without a Scout unit.
Like Arena of the Gods/Gauntlet mode you can choose between different missions and you can see what type or reward you will get but you don’t know what reward exactly. So for example you know that a mission will give you a Unique Unit but you don’t know which one. Once you finish the mission you can choose between 3 random unique units.
The random choices would not be fully random but try to be from different categories, like for example one Archer, Infantry and Cavalry upgrade each so that you have a chance to choose the direction you want to go with the civ.
Potential categories:
- Unique Unit
- Unique Technology
- Civilisation bonus
- Unit line upgrade
- Blacksmith, Barracks, Archery or Stable technology (besides unit line upgrades)
- University or Monastery Technology
- Extra starting units/buildings (like +1 Villager, House, Scout (can also be Eagle, Champi or Camel), resource drop off building, Mule Cart or Watchtower)
- Extra starting resources (+50 Food/Wood/Gold/Stone)
- Extra starting technologies (having one technology researched at the beginning)
So after 40 fights you have a decent tech tree and start the match with extra units and resources letting you get to the action faster.
If your are lucky you can get some really powerful combinations like some UUs and UTs are balanced around missing some technologies. You can potentially get Franks with Bloodlines or Britons with Thumbring.
