New DLC! Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition – The Last Chieftains

Ah! I think it was the Muisca combat UU…with a plant behind his head haha!

Oh lmao

Seems this DLC is going to be a huge breath of fresh air after the so called ShuWeiWu civs.

Finally, civs from a world area that people wanted for a long time.

Just like I imagined…

Only in Uruguay they tried to follow Steam’s suggested price. In Argentina it’s 50% more expensive than what it should be. Amazing.

I sure as hell hope not because the mapuche units in Age of Empires 3 speak gibberish.

I disagree. I think this DLC looks bad. All the unique units have gimmicky magical abilities just like the China DLC civs.

To be fair, only 3 out of the new 6 UU have a gimmicky ability.

Yep, looks like AoE

More info:

Very little to no random map changes or additions for SP/MP skirmish players

Let the heroes unit stay in the campaign only

They are, a dev clarified this on Reddit.

Seems like I was correct in my orb pondering…

That’s three too many.

EDIT: Looking at them again, at least four of them are super gimmicky, and potentially you could say all six of them are.

The Mapuche unique units are the Kona, a melee cavalryman that deals increased damage to injured targets, and the Bolas Rider, a ranged cavalryman whose projectiles slow down enemy units. - Both are gimmicky

The Muisca unique units are the Guecha Warrior, a javelineer whose death heals nearby Guecha Warriors, and the Temple Guard, a heavy infantryman that attacks faster the longer it remains in combat. - Both are gimmicky

The Tupi unique units are the Blackwood Archer, an inexpensive ranged soldier that trains in pairs, and the Ibirapema Warrior, a heavy infantryman who deals area damage. - At least the second one seems gimmicky

Heavy Infantry with AoE is gimmick? Like Slavs Druzhina Infantry? Both Tupi UU seem to be standard

Both Tupi units seem pretty standard, and the Bolas rider and the Guecha warrior’s gimmicks have tie-ins to IRL (the Bolas rider more literally, the Guecha warrior’s is based on what those warriors believed about their unit from what I saw). But Bolas’ specific purpose is to trip up or slow down people or hunted prey, so the gimmick there fits perfectly, even if it probably will be an annoying nightmare to balance. I don’t really like slow/snare effects personally, but this is the one place it really makes sense.

Tbh, despite the DLC looking good (beyond the heroes) I dont like that the devs dont experiment with unit stats anymore, just slapping gimmicks and hoping its idiferent enough

Like, if Rise of the Rajas had released today Ballista Elephants would be able to load three crossbow shots prior to conbat yet would have like half their current hp to make it more like scorpions

They stopped doing that because there’s only so much you can do with that kind of thing before it becomes redundant with other units. I started doing the same thing in my own concepts for that reason. It’s a real problem that continues to grow as the game gets bigger.

No? Like theres still a lot to explore, you just nedd to look for niches

A fast and tanky trebuchet or scorpion could have been good enough unique units but the devs decided that it wasnt enough and thats how we ended with slow, fragile, mounted siege with shitty gimmicks with the Khitangut and Shu UU
