The Central Plains people indeed had a certain concept of “cultural entity” or “cultural community”, but apart from Jiangzhe much of Southern China was not included in such an “entity” and was perceived as others. I’ve already mentioned many such examples and instances from historical records so I won’t repeat myself. Strictly speaking (if we’re following the ancient Central Plain people’s worldview), then the Han ethnic group should only include the Central Plains plus Jiangzhe, Hubei, and Chuanyu, but not other areas of Southern China. And regarding whether peoples under a certain cultural influence can be called an ethnicity, there’s no unified standard on that, you think they could but others may think they couldn’t.
“Han culture” is a concept that appeared relatively recently as did “Han ethnicity”, there were no such concepts in the past, and much of Southern China had never been included in such an “cultural entity” until the Republican era. The Central Plains people of that time didn’t consider the Li, Liao, Yao, Zhuang, Man, Pu, Bo etc. of Southern China to be the same as themselves, or else they wouldn’t disrespect or look down on them to such an extent. And the native southerners of that time didn’t regard Central Plains people as one of them either or else there wouldn’t be so many rebellions. To conclude, “Han ethnicity” was a concept that emerged in late Qing/early Republican era, and had very little to do with the worldview of the ancient Central Plains people.
I already took into consideration of the game, cause if we’re going by the worldview of the ancient Central Plains people, then Southern China should at least have a dozen or so civs. But I think adding the Dians/Zangkes is already enough to cover the others.
When we’re discussing about the game you always talk about “Hanminzu”, but when I used records to disprove the existence of such a concept in the past, you start talking about the game again. Please be more consistent and stop being double-standard.
