New DLC Inbound!

Let’s predict Chinese changes.

Scorpion → Nest of Bees/Hwacha. Nest of Bees/Hwacha fire 20 (25 for elite) projectiles at once. Each projectile has 5 (6 for elite) pierce attack. Projectile disperse is 1 tile. They have “Gunpowder” armor class. Rest stats are same/similar to scorpion.

Rocketry = Scorpion +4 attack → Nest of Bees/Hwacha +x attack.

And I hope useless “Demolition Ship +50 HP” bonus is changed to something meaningful.

Chinese new year is Jan 29th

I’m really just tired of Definitive Edition and assume the worst in that the Camel Siege will be spammed in a big ball like Ballista Elephants in games like Michi or Black Forest(and thus the it’s stupid fantasy imo, sorry for the poor choice of words), of which could be simply solved if the unit had a sharp weakness.

My fear stems from the what i view as improper work for like half the UU of Definitive Edition:
-Shrivamsha Rider(not a believable ability without a proper animation, why no shirt for being so tanky, also doesnt pull off a nice rambo look like Jaguar Warrior does)
-Urumi Swordsman(why no shirt for being so tanky, also doesnt pull off a nice rambo look like Jaguar Warrior does)
-Composite Bowman(not a believable ability)
-Warrior Priest(hes georgian, really??)
-Monaspa (chainmail that resists melee is weird, also lancer should bring special bonuses instead of being a reskin)
-Leitis (not a believable ability, also damage isnt believable for weapon type like an axe or mace, also lancer should bring special bonuses instead of being a reskin)
-Boyar (axes should bring special bonuses instead of being a reskin)
-Flaming Camel (stupid if massed)
-Centurian (aura with no border indicator)
-Ballista Elephant (stupid if massed)
-Coustillier (his ability points out that other lancers can’t)
-Hussite Wagon (a tank… and the UT gives SPEED… real life tactics with this were waaay cooler)
-Obuch (very nitpicky here but choosing to make the hammer into fantasy hammers really hurts on making the ability believable)
-Ratha (CHARIOT OF THE SWAMPS…)

This is the 1st time I read that Urumi is tanky.

If it must be a replacement, I predict that it should be for the Mangonel instead. It just doesn’t look like it’s able to fire in a straight line, besides it does replace the Mangonel in AoE4. The Mangonel rains rocks on archers, and the Nest of bees rains fire arrows on archers. Also, it’s possible to be a replacement for the Bombard Cannon as its potential curved projectile trajectory, although less likely.

Then, the Rocketry can provide +4 attack to not only Scorpions but also Nests of Bees (and +2 attack to not only Chu Ko Nu but also Fire Lancers), and the Shinkichon can provide +1 range to not only Hwacha but also War Wagons (while the bolt of the War Wagon are replaced with multiple fire arrows that are fired in a straight line as if it was a Huacha wagon).

I’m not aware of AoE4 that much. All I knew that AoE4 Chinese have that unit.

I think we talked about this before. Now I remember replacing mangonel is better.

Replacing BBC is also a possibility since NoB is an early gunpowder unit and hence can be locked behind Chemistry. Also from red vs yellow screenshot it seems like they have more range than mangonel.

Most of these are complaints about the games limits. Because at the end of the gay, they do have to make units interesting to play/have a unique role within their civ.

I’ve done a lot of research into the warfare of Bengal, and this unit was a thing up until the 12th century. Strange as it may seem.

For the urumi whipman, ya i meant to type about their attack instead of their tankiness but i thought i could save 5 seconds by not changing the copy and paste of shrivamsha, as it’s sort of correct against heavy infantry UU & i assumed it was obvious because their unrealistic attack just sticks out like a sore thumb against heavily armored units thanks to the wootz steel… sorry!

Lol i know but it feels unrealistic, and worse of all for me is that it points out that bengalis, with the world specialty of sheer number of elephants, have elephants without the switch from ranged to melee feature, which would be epic.

Back on topic, very specifically for firelancer animation, i really hope it looks normal when an enemy is between the tip of the spear & the 0 range of melee, might ocd me knowing he can blast someone with a spear without there being a room to even fit the length of the spear(or whatever length needed), maybe a buff for spears of 0.25 range is graphically needed which would be equal to a 5hp bonus for mass spear-line battles(dreams).

Chariot that was used in every part of the world.

Along with the camel catapult thingy, those are examples of what TV Tropes calls Reality is Unrealistic.

Imagine 500 years from now people are playing ww2 strategy games and someone thinks the spinning dam buster is a fantasy unit.

Or if the Killdozer appears in any future games. What a wild story.

They don’t resist melee though, not more than other units - I don’t understand this point

Lots of units weapon sizes are exaggerated in the game for readability, plus large walking stick sized Warhammers were real in polish nobility

I think giving specific weapons, specific attributes (axes, lances etc.) would just complicate the game further, not every visual distinction needs to alter the game. Coustilliers have that ability because that’s what make them a ‘unique’ unit, if every lancer had it - it would be even more difficult to make UUs stand out

Microsoft is pulling resources out so dlc will be given on larger periods of time, one each year or every 18 months or so, maybe 3 or 4 civs per dlc, but less dlcs overall, less resources to spend, thats the future. They hit the jackpot with the chronicles team, because they outsource those dlcs to them, they dont do much.

In the absence of any information about the new units, surely this reasoning applies to any other new unit in the screenshots as well? Or at least the ranged ones? I don’t think AoE2 army compositions are ever very realistic, especially on closed maps.

I’m not a fan of auras generally in AoE2 – I don’t they’d make sense for any of the new units we’ve seen in this DLC, so fingers crossed there aren’t any. I’m hoping to see some more elegant civ designs than some of the recent ones – the BFG ones in particular I find quite clunky and overdesigned with too much focus on historical details.

It’ll be interesting to see if Koreans end up with three units representing hwacha: war wagons, onagers with shinkichon, and now an actual hwacha unit.

I mean honestly though the BFG civs are moreso built with single player in mind, so I think a heightened focus on historical detail is fine given that.

Something someone on Reddit noted. The Armenian symbol is on their castle. Is it possible the Tangut and Jurchen ones are on theirs too?

It’s possible, but I think it’s possible Jurchens and Chinese will have the same Castle.
At least, the castle on the right could fit the Chinese IMO, even if the coat of arms looks like some Jurchens parchment.

The flags have a Jurchen symbol painted on them.

While it is much closer to Chinese in style than the current one (which is basically Osaka Castle without the white paint), it’s explicitly Jurchen, and was likely designed with that intent. And I don’t see it replacing the Chinese one.

The structure of the castle is pretty Chinese, which may also be because the Jurchens had conquered northern China. The Jurchen flag is a strong evidence, but there is no other evidence (such as its actual reference) to indicate that it must have belonged to the Jurchens.

We don’t have any more information, we can only wait.
